Based on previous reports, expect more products to be added in later editions.

    Tested products:

    AVG Internet Security
    Bitdefender Internet Security
    ESET Smart Security
    F-Secure Internet Security
    G Data Internet Security
    Kaspersky Internet Security
    McAfee Internet Security
    Norton Security
    Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security.

    Note the disclosure:

"Symantec Corporation funded the production of this report, selected the test metrics and list of products to include in this report, and supplied some of the test scripts used for the tests."

This merely reinforces my anecdotal evidence that Eset slows browsing, and overall network/system performance. According to this article - it does so 'heavily' in some categories.. As an Eset user, this isn't what I like to see, and reinforces my overall opinion that I need to move to Norton 2015. Since Norton FINALLY utilizes their superior enterprise technology in the 2015 consumer product.

This merely confirms my thoughts of Symantec heavily commissioning and funding different tests (see Denis labs as well) to promote it's new product (still with bugs if we go through their forums). Eset being one of the straightforward rivals especially considering system performance is targeted heavier. It was awarded the lowest place in Denis labs performance part of the test as well. As to the "anecdotal evidence" about slowing browsing it depends on the specific machine. I'm yet to see with their new version any perceptible slow down in browsing or streaming. As many times have been stated here at Wilders by people of the AV trade, much more into the things than me, if an AV program has a web guard, shield, call it whatever you want, it always affects browsing in some way, the point is how much and how the HTTP/HTTPS filtering is implemented into the OS. Norton uses a different method compared to most other AVs with web guards and so I agree that its impact is probably the slightest but to say that Eset "heavily" impacts browsing is next to an upfront lie. No offense intended but the stir-up in the tests following Norton's new release is interesting to put it mildly.

Do you even know how commissioned tests work. Symantec or any company has no say in how the results turn out. They give the tester a list of tests to run (and this list is public and so is the methodology) and the tester does the test. Dennis Technology Labs and PassMark are a lot more legitimate than some shady testing outfits with the .ru suffix that Kaspersky mysteriously always seems to win :)

I wouldn't be so sure (unless you're being sarcastic).

SONAR Advanced Technology = nothing but the ability to remove threats that previously required the use of Norton Power Eraser. Only High certainty and non-FP threats are now removed by the main scanner itself, without the need to resort to NPE for that purpose.

Useful, yes - but nothing new unfortunately. It may go deeper than that (but I seriously doubt it).

  6. Test proofs your personal experience to be right. What matter's most in regard to performance (related to usage frequency)?
    1. Internet browsing
    2. IE launchtime (generally program launch time)

ESET twice in top 3, overall first in this usage frequency based subset, not a bad test aye? :D

I can't see that ESET is that slow on the browsing part (benchmark 6) it's at the top there. I don't feel any slowdown myself anyway (I wouldn't accept that either : ) ) but it won't get looked at unless you contact customer care about it so they can investigate.

Well, I know how they work (at least according to what's stipulated on paper) but still I know how money works as well. Don't forget the Malwarebytes fiasco.

Some of these categories are a bit silly. I really don't care about things like install time, amount of registry keys, memory use during initial scan.

Yes, they are indeed silly but I figure why they are included. The differences in the categories which matter are so negligible that there would be too little of a difference in the end results, if they weren't included ;)

Right. I have not looked in depth, but I suspect depending on which tests are included, there may be 2-3 different winners.

It's funny though that Norton, which actively analyzes the network stream, has less impact on browsing performance than Webroot; and the competitors, who does this as well, are almost as quick.

My complaint would be that they are testing the new Norton Security against everyone else's product from last year.

Valid complaint. 2015 Norton has significant advantages due to this, as this version is technologically much different than 2014.

Perhaps yet in prior versions of the test, when the older version of Norton was tested, it still won. Again, it may be a matter of which tests they include in the survey, and how they are weighted. For instance the Webroot sponsored version has some different tests than the Norton sponsored version.

Edition 2 needs some work. They have listed it as Edition 1 and have not added a revision history for Edition 2.

    Changes I have noticed:

Added results for a newer version of Norton Security. Previous version was a beta.

    Added results for

    Panda Internet Security
    Avira Internet Security Suite
    Avast! Internet Security

    Norton Security with Backup
    Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security
    Kaspersky PURE
    McAfee Total Security
    Bitdefender Total Security.

Many of the tests are measured in milliseconds. A fraction of one second.

In other words... in casual usage, you would not notice a difference.

This test is useless to me.

I'd rather use any of the three last place finishers than most of the rest on the list.
    F-Secure Internet Security 101
    G Data Internet Security 88
Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 87

As we all know here at Wilders... the slowness of any AV is highly dependent on your particular system.

Actually Norton 2015 is one of the lightest products in the world now. It cannot be compared to Norton 360. Try the demo, it's light as a feather and doesn't slow a system down at all. Trend is lighter in 2015, and getting lighter with each revision. It's remarkable how light Trend FEELS on a machine.. I find AVAST! Business Edition 2015 to be pretty light, but if you have intelligent streaming on, it slows browsing slightly. I turn that off, and Avast Business 2015 feels very light.
