'Subscription questions for NS & NSBU

    Posted: 23-Sep-2014 | 9:27AM • 0 Replies •
    Permalink

I want to clarify a few things. Firstly, I recommend that you review our
announcement on NS and NSBU for information about subscription. A few key points I'd like to call out:

    - Your NIS/N360/NAV activations keys are not able to be used in your Norton Security or Norton Security with Backup products
    - We encourage customers to continue using their NIS/NAV/N360 products until the end of their subscriptions (and disable AutoRenewal), at which time they can purchase a license and subscription to Norton Security or Norton Security with Backup
    - For those who wish to get NS and NSBU now, and are concerned about losing subscription time for your existing NIS/N360/NAV products, we recommend that you contact our
Customer Support team via Chat to find the best option available

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks.'

$80 to cover 5 devices is a good deal. However I currently cover 'all' devices for free (ASUS AC2400 router with Trend), and back that up with ESET on each device using their 5+5 package from Newegg for $34.00.. So with that considered $80 isn't a great deal. But price per machine is pretty good. I'd just wait for a deal myself.

I did find Norton 2015 very light, friendly, and absolutely no impact on browsing. I need to disable HTTP/HTTPS scanning on Eset, it slows things down, and stalls videos. I've pinned it to Eset, as I have a busy, high end connection, and once that was disabled, everything is fine. I still do not like using 'half' of a product, so if I find a Norton sale, who knows - I may switch. At least until ESET gets their HTTP/HTTPS scanning engine sorted so it's zero or near zero impact.

    Thanks.

I find this version of Norton extremely light. The only thing is it doesn't seem to update very often. Maybe they moved more to the cloud and frequent updates are not as necessary.

Edit: Now that I look at the log, I guess it's been updating more than I realized.

Well, that's the question isn't it? They could just state publicly what the policy is.

Agreed this version is exceptionally light. Most impressive is the speed of the URL scanning.

This is the first version of Norton in a decade I have considered running. Mostly because they decided to include many of the Enterprise functions in the consumer release. I have been working with the aggressive mode, enhanced sonar, and other aspects in the enterprise edition, and having good results preventing outbreaks with it. Symantec WITHOUT these, I found to not be all that effective in terms of what I see in the NOC/MSP. So this edition, coupled with the performance improvements - turning heads!

    Norton support is great.

I have a Norton 360 key that was not activated purchased some years back during a sales. i downloaded the trial version of Norton security. and chat with their live chat team and they proceed placed a free order of the Norton security for me..

now i have the trial version of Norton Security for 30days and a 1 year subscription of Norton Security.

The fact that they are making everyone contact support to "upgrade" their license will get many complaints. If this were truly a new product it would be version 1, not 22. That and the fact that you can't even look at it without activating it.. I hope this all backfires on them miserably. If I can't use my current license (not yet activated) and can't test it without one then this product goes no further in my world. This will also serve as the reason I never again buy a license in advance.

Heh! I just had an offer through with 40% off Norton Security as I helped with Beta testing, that still means it will cost $48 - around €37. Blow that, no chance, I still have 10 months left on my NIS licence.

Norton made a big mistake with this license stuff.

They should have done what Trend does.. ANY Trend license, even 3-4 year old ones are valid, as long as they still have days left. Norton is going to lose a lot of business over this hideous decision.

From what I am seeing on their forum the live chat session does not always get you the upgrade. Depending on who you get they may just tell you no. Sounds like you have to get the right person and be a good negotiator on top of it. Maybe if Norton is lucky they will get enough money out of those they force to re-purchase to offset those that leave and don't return. I'm not giving them a dime.

if you contact them and be respectful and explain why you would like the newer version you should be okay with getting them to upgrade you.

The policy shouldn't vary depending on who you speak to or how nicely you ask.

The policy is totally inconsistent. It varies from user to user. Norton has yet to put out the word to customer support of a fair and consistent policy. At worst, if you buy the new NS customer support will apply a portion of your remaining subscription to the new subscription - most get 100% of the balance of their remaining subscription, others get less. At best, they let you use a free trial key and apply the balance of your current subscription to that. It's a total crap shoot. You would have thought that Norton by now would have put in place a consistent and fair system. I hope they put more thought into their product than they have on how to consistently and fairly treat owners of current subscriptions.

my point was for those who wish to try to get them to do it for you this is the best way. they have already said they are not automatically giving you a new lic for your old one. yes it sucks and no i dont agree with it but if you chat or call and nicely explain im sure they will help you out. only that was my point

Business users are where the margins are at and what they care far more about. You had better believe nothing like this would have ever happened on the business user side of the operation. Different users treated differently. Nothing new. It's all about margins going forward in the consumer side of operation. Past precedent and good customer service be darned. No doubt planning should have been done much better. No consumer should ever have to negotiate, nor try 4 times to get Symantec to honor times from the prev license. If Symantec is as serious about margins as they seem to be,and after making so many users jump through hoops,I would not expect to find the deals we used to on sites like newegg,downloadcrew,etc..$80 is a lot to ask for a suite these days, especially when there are arguably far better, far more affordable options.

There is, but you have to register an account and activate the product. Otherwise you only get a screen that says Activation Required. Too many hoops to jump through.

Something that has not been mentioned yet is what happens next round when they release a new version again. I read the fine print, and from my understanding there is nothing about being able to upgrade to a next year version. If that's the case, then there is no way I would ever buy from them again. And I am talking about a policy written in stone, not some chat or phone call which I think is ridiculous in the first place.

Was there ever anything about updating to a newer version in the old EULA/TOS or was this just done out of a sense of fairness or something? And by version are you referring to an upgrade to Version 22 ? Like V 22.2 or something?

    What are you reading from?

Come next September when Norton releases a new version again. This years is 22 I think so next year I suppose would be 23. Read the fine print in the trial. And yes their policy was to be able to upgrade to next years version.

NIS 2014 License Terms Re: Upgrades: Section 2.Software and Services and Content Updates:

    http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/about/media/eulas/2014/en_us/NAV_NIS_N360 21.0_USE - EULA.pdf

NS License Terms Re: Upgrades: Section 2. 2. Software and Services and Content Updates:

    http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/home_homeoffice/media/eula/NS_2.0_EULA_USE.pdf

They both appear the same. 2. A. of each refers to the availability of new Version Updates being at the sole discretion of Norton

    2. B. Of each referring to content update = new virus definitions, malicious url lists says you have a "Right" to these
