Well if that's the case and NIS 2014 license owners don't get these enhanced protection features, Norton is making a huge public/customer relations mistake. Breach of Trust, Unethical Business Practice, Misleading Customers to rely on Past Policy--call it what you will. The Old Panda reincarnated. Panda learned it's lesson. Will Norton not go to school on Panda's former misguided upgrade policy?

So far they have said nothing other than NIS keys don't activate NS.

The hopeful fan bois remain optimistic, despite the fact that Norton hasn't said a word other than a blog post leading one to believe that NIS license owners will be left out. I'll give them a chance to redeem themselves. But then again Norton has never been good at self-protection of it's name or it's product as demonstrated in two YouTube videos where a zero access rootkit was able to totally disable NIS 2014 and allow in hundreds of malware.

Keep up the good work Norton-cutting costs will only get you so far. Cut costs all you want-if you pizz-off enuf customers all the cost cutting in the world won't redeem your balance sheet.

Well, personally I think it looks more confusing than the ESET GUI and if ESET would release one like this I would be disappointed, but each to their own, and not everyone likes the same type of GUI design of course

 

Just gave Norton Security 2015 a quick try on my computer. In my opinion the GUI 'looks' nice but I've found it not easy to navigate (though I have no prior Norton experience whatsoever). Web-protection does not work with Chrome 64bit.

 

Note, a lot of these new features in the 2015 consumer product have been in the enterprise one. 12.1.4 Enterprise was the first one to have enhanced Sonar, Aggressive Heuristics, Data Leak Protection, and Intelligent Bot-Net rejection. These are all advances that 'significantly' reduce infections on MSP systems I work with.. So that's good news for consumers.

 

Yeah great news for consumers who never bought NIS. For current NIS license holders it means Norton is screwing us out of what Norton led us to believe we were buying, Namely: free upgrades to the latest Norton protections during the life of our licenses.

I have 11 months left on a NIS subscription I bought when Kaspersky, for some reason after an update, would no longer let my PC access the server of a game I enjoy playing.

I just uninstalled Norton-I want nothing to do with an unethical company.

This is the second time I have had to uninstall a Norton Product after buying a new license. Two years ago I bought a new license for NIS 2014. With nearly a full year to go, I immediately uninstalled it after seeing two YouTube video reviews done by well known reviewers where a zero access rootkit was able to totally disable NIS and hundreds of malware were injected into the machines testing NIS. Luckily, at that time my local big box brick and mortar store was running a special promo on the new Kaspersky IS, which I had used in the past for many years before switching to the "New Norton" in 2013.

For several months after the introduction of NIS 2014 the NIS forums were loaded with posts by customers asking for help in removing zero access which had infected their PC's. One of the Norton Forum "Gurus", as the are called, was writing scripts tailored to specific users' machine to remove zero access, He was overwhelmed with requests.

Lot's of sad NIS users on the NIS forums today.

I really don't understand their management. It took them two years to overcome their old reputation by introducing the New Norton, and now they are throwing away tons of customer "good will" it took them years to establish. Good luck with that.

The New Norton same as the Old Norton, only worse. What a bunch of thieving geniuses.

I guess my mistake was not buying NIS from them directly at their inflated price--they offer a 60-day no questions asked refund policy if you buy from their store.

Sounds good, but we'll see what the third party reviews say. In particular I'd like to know if this version is effective against PUPs - previously versions were not in my experience.

 

Not letting people with current subscriptions switch over is just a money grab plain and simple. Two retailers that I use, Amazon and Newegg, are still selling the 2014 versions, and I expect there will be a lot of disappointed customers once they find out they can't upgrade to latest version which was normal.

Someone said there is a method to enable more enhanced Norton Signatures. How is this accomplished? I can't find any data on this.

Remember, Norton is the big boy, it's the most heavily targeted security company in the world. It's the holy grail for hackers. So that plays into struggles they've had, also the fact that many malware actually looks for Norton to disable when it tries to infect a machine. Security through obscurity is more than a theory. Obfuscation, and self protection becomes more difficult as time goes on. It's an arms race really. Some malware actually detects analysis these days and disables itself, so some companies put hooks in to trick it into thinking it's on a VM. There are a huge number of these battles being waged behind the scenes.. Geek vs Geek.

Third. This is why companies like Trend and Fortinet are moving to more advanced systems. Trend Deep Security creates it's own virtual patches to stop exploits, vulnerabilities, and in some cases rootkits/malware. This functions like a form of artificial intelligence in their system. I predicted almost a year ago that Trend would continue to climb the charts because of this. This technology is far more than FUD. Given I am involved with Trend I should put a disclaimer - I don't want this to appear to be marketing, and I want to focus on the newer technologies, and what is the driving force of them, and how we can benefit. The first consumer involvement with Trend DS is on the new ASUS routers, which patches itself from vulnerabilities. Trend 2015 has 'some' aspects, but still has a ways to go IMO.

AV's that want to keep ahead of the game need to start getting creative, and stop complaining like Symantec has been. (in my opinion)

 

Norton used to have an option of downloading a full set of A/V signatures that included all historical sig.,s or downloading a "smart set" of signatures.

There's a post on the old forums that explained all of this but Norton changed it's forum to coincide with NS and that forum page is no longer available.

Does anyone know if Norton is smart enough to know NOT to defrag SSD drives in its scheduled maintenance? For the heck of it I tried manually kicking off a drive optimization, and it said defragging rather than Trimming, which leaves me concerned.

 

Norton has apparently relented to a degree for existing license holders. If you buy the new NS, the remaining amount of time on your current Norton license gets added to your new NS license. Its kind of like getting a free upgrade and buying next years subscription in advance.

 

Is that written in stone, or is it a case by case basis?

Next year they could do the same thing again that they are doing now. Where does it end?

 

i got someone from cust service today to basically swap my lic for one for the new product. not sure how they did it but i called upset and they gave me a new lic key with even an extra bit of time on it.

 

Amazon is now selling Norton Security for One Device (Download) for $59.99, and Norton Security (Download) for $79.99. I assume the $79.99 version is for 5 devices? At this point it looks like when my NIS subscription expires I'll be moving on.

 

im positive there soon enough will be really good sales on norton like there always has been on places like newegg and even at a local staples. norton almost always in on sale somewhere for very cheap or even free after rebate.

 

Well it's a great deal if you have five devices I thought everyone had a Windows PC, a laptop, an iPhone ,an iPad, and and a Mac

I think they are charging based on an assumption of techie overkill.

I'm using the trial version. It's light as a feather and my web browsing is totally unaffected. Very impressive performance-wise. If I had 4 more devices I'd consider buying it I think their marketing strategy will bankrupt their non-enterprise division. I guess it's good for high income families with home networks. Amazon price is same as Norton's though Norton is not presently selling the single license version.

You can buy BitDefender Sphere that covers an unlimited number of devices for 50 bucks, which is a great deal if you have an unlimited number of devices.

It's using 11 MB Ram. (When at rest doing nothing)

Running a scan looks like it averages about 50 MB Ram.
