It's distributed through auto-update and from the main site, but I haven't found a changelog or blog entry about it.

Thank you BoerenkoolMetWorst, I've always liked Opera as a backup browser to my others. It just works... :)

Opera 12.16 notified me of that update to 12.17. They even included a link to change log, but the last changelog there is for 12.15. Go figure.

Edit: according to this bunch of opinions, it's security fixes and no feature fixes

There is a changelog for 12.16, but it's not in the changelogs overview :S
    http://www.opera.com/docs/changelogs/unified/1216/

    About the 12.17 release:

As discussed in our blog post about Heartbleed, the standalone autoupdater for Opera 12 on Windows was vulnerable to a Heartbleed attack from someone who would be in possession of a valid Opera certificate. While fixing this, we also found another issue with our autoupdate on Windows which might be exploited by someone in possession of such a certificate. Successful exploitation, which would require using a third, unrelated bug on Windows, could allow a mischievous man in the middle to run arbitrary code on the computer. Opera 12.17 is therefore a recommended security upgrade on Windows. While it is unlikely that someone has gained access to a certificate of ours, we cannot rule out that some foreign intelligence agency has done so, and we want to be on the safe side.
Opera 12 for Windows will update itself automatically. Mac and Linux are not affected, and will not receive a 12.17 update.

Thanks for this thread: I go on using v. 12 of Opera; until new versions will have BOOKMARKS.

    Updated to 12.17.

One day there will be bookmarks in new Opera hopefully. I know the new Opera has a 'pretend' bookmarks but it's not the real thing !

Missing or mangled bookmarks is an issue for me also.
As is no easy way to do site-specific security exceptions. They have some pretend method which is convoluted and nowhere near what we can do in Opera 12.
I haven't installed 12.17 yet, but will. It sounds OK.

Hmmm, it does seem to be less of a resource hog than v12.16, and it also starts up a bit faster. I can notice these things because I´m on an old machine. However, they forgot about fixing a major bug, the Bookmark Manager doesn´t seem to respond to the keyboard, what a bunch of morons!

In what way? I've used keys for navigating, left, right, delete, etc. Do you mean some other keys?

On my system, the bookmark manager (in all versions of Opera v12) doesn´t respond to the keyboard. So when I press "W", it should normally jump to all bookmarks starting with the letter "W". It doesn´t do that, am I correct? :thumbd:

    Correct. Doesn't do that.

Opera 12 has a lot of bugs compared to version 11, and version 11 has a lot of bugs compared to version 10, ...
I remember when they started to use terms like "your pet bugs" and Opera became pretty buggy. I guess they just couldn't keep up with Chrome.

    Thanks for checking.

I wouldn´t say it´s that bad, besides this stupid bug, Opera 12 is actually working quite well. :)

However, on my old PC I´m still using v11, it´s a bit more lite on the system.

I'm using both Opera 9 and Opera 12. Opera 9 is incompatible with a lot of sites these days but it is great for the sites for which it does still work on which includes most forums. Wilders is on that list but I browse it in Opera 12 because I click on a lot of external links from Wilders and Opera 12 is compatible with almost everything. I'm glad that there is still some maintenance being done on it because the new Chromium based Opera is a completely different browser that doesn't give the user anything near to the control the old Opera gave in both how the browser looked and worked. I like things like being able to have disk caching completely disabled and all the caching done in memory. Great for both speed and privacy.

I don't understand why the newer opera cannot retain some or all of the flexibility/customizability of the older versions. Once one gets used to having that ability to customize, all other browsers just seem so limited. I like the way folders can be made and dropped onto the toolbar then bookmarks thrown into them - this let's a person organize what they're reading about, makes it easier to keep track of multiple things and get back to ones unfinished when time permits, etc. Not to mention custom button layouts, toggle-able toolbars, amongst many other cool things. I thought progress is about improving upon things that are innovative, not regressing or scrapping things that are worth continuing and improving.

I know how you feel, Opera Presto is superior to Opera Blink in almost everything except for extensions. :)

Question about the current versions of Opera.

I noticed they removed the ability to disable SiteCheck. I am not inclined to allow my URL's to be constantly verified through a third party. Why do other blink forks allow this to be disabled? Second, what is the purpose of Opera sending every site I visit to Virginia? Watching my port activity I find Opera every few seconds pinging a Virginia IP, this doesn't appear related to SiteCheck.

    Host: 37.228.108.252
    IP: 37.228.108.252
    Hostname: lb03.us.ext.opera.com

Anyone have any ideas, and why they would remove the ability (even via about://flags) to turn off their validation/checking methods?

If it is a static IP you can block it with a firewall.

Already did that, but the problem is with up to 30+ clients in the home, the UTM spends most of it's horsepower blocking the same IP over and over, and this degrades overall performance. I could also add it to the hosts file on each machine, but still an annoyance.
