On our Iranian forum, some Windows defender user(win  came, asking about the cause of its WD being inactivated and his browser was too slow....

We asked him to scan his system with Hitman Pro and here is the result

Lots of adwares has intruded to his system and WD did nothing.....

MSE/WD are strong against viruses, but agaist PUPs, they are leaky.....

Then again, most AVs are still lame against PUPs.

Some more than others. In my office, we have 5 pc, 2 with windows defender, one with avast (mine) and 2 with avira. Guess what? The two with windows defender are always full of adwares and other crapware. The other three are usually clean. Just last week, I had to remove this damned qvo6 crap from one pc with defender and it was not easy.

I have been using my test rig for just under 3 years with no/zero/nada/ real time security software installed, and have never had an issue. I scan with MBAM/HMP/HouseCall/Emsisoft every once in a while just to make sure. I only install software from trusted sites like MajorGeeks for example, and I scan the download with one or more of the scanners, or VT every time.

AV for me is not needed.

And how do you know that the blame lies on Windows Defender and not on the users? No anti-virus can win against PEBKAC, you can't fix stupid.

Yeah, i could go without an AV too, but WD is for free, so i am going to use it.

Still want to know how this is possible to always get infected?

Well you have a software to keep you away from Adwares.....Adguard is at your signature

You may periodically scan your system with Hitman Pro

    So you re protected....

Disable adguard to see how the pages are in nowadays real world.....you will be directed to download some of them.....and be sure MSE/WD cannot block the majority.
I know you have the knowledge to diagnose which files should not be clicked, but what about a novice?

Some say MS represents its security for free....dont forget that it s part of the windows and the windows is not free....also dont forget that there are lots of better free security products down there.

Of course, if people weren't stupid and didn't click on everything is on the screen, antivirus softwares would be pretty useless. No doubts the biggest problem is the lack of common sense by users. Though the question stands still: why those same stupid people find more difficult to infect systems with different antivirus solutions? Maybe because they are a bit more effective than windows defender? At least this is my personal experience.

It depends. If commercial AVs have HIPS in it then it's not fair to compare MSE with it.

No, you're doing it just right. =V

Well, with WD i do not pay every year for it, like on other security products. Sure, i had to pay once for Windows. ;)

    Might be the reason. :isay:

It doesn't have quite as good detection as many of the others, but on the other hand, it is the only one that's truly "clean", meaning no toolbars or ads or other b.s. Just depends on what you want...

Having MSE installed is just as good as not having nay antivirus installed. Don't bother with it

I agree!. Especially if you have an SSD with a small capacity even if it's 120GB SSD.

Today I was asked to fix a PC at work that has its Outlook not working....... as soon as I got to the PC, noticed it had PC Optimizer, SpeedUpMyPc, Baidu PC Faster, Search Protect and a lot of other junk...

I did a scan with MBAM and AdwCleaner and SAS and the machines was heavily infested with viruses/ toolbars, search hijackers, I cleaned it all......then installed AVIRA AV Pro (which I no longer use but they had a license so.....) then Avira caught like another 7 viruses........

So much for MSE's protection! it's like having no AV at all.......

MSE does not remove PUPS which a lot of those are classified as.

Ahh I see, no wonder they were so heavily infected. I guess any AV with no PUP detection is useless in today's world unless it is an expert user who knows better than not to blindly click the NEXT button and install every thing he sees
