Can u suggest software to clone an existing working Win7 x64 onto a new HDD. Both buy & free options OK but as its a low volume thing free's better.
Hi Brian. MIGRATE AN OPERATING SYSTEM. Cdrive as in Win7x64 operating system installed on drive C. Not to be confused with just a 'data storage' HDD or partition.
AaLF, Great. Cdrive is not a hard drive as some people think. The C: drive is usually the operating system partition, but not necessarily. The booted OS assigns the drive letters so when the computer is turned off, there are no drive letters. With multi-booting, several different partitions may be assigned the C: drive letter, depending on which OS is booted. If you boot a USB flash drive containing DOS, the flash drive partition will be C: drive. So if you want to clone the entire HD (all partitions including the OS partition) then CopyWipe is a good choice. Is the new HD the same size or larger than the old HD?
You should be able to do it with Macrium Reflect (Free). I installed a new hard drive, then restored a backup image I'd made previously with Macrium. If you want an exact copy of the old drive, be sure to Clone, not Image. If you Image the old C partition, the new hard drive will also be partitioned. In other words, Imaging backs up partitions only. If you want an exact copy of the whole HDD, Clone it. If all you have is one partition, C, it won't matter, but it's likely there's at least a recovery partition, maybe others. I'd Clone anyway though just to be safe. It'll become a lot clearer if you install Macrium and check it out.
