I use ABE with ultimate list and malware domains but find it slows down my surfing. I am mostly concerned with stopping trackers not just ads. Does MVPS stop trackers as well as ABP/E? I use Hostsman and it allows you to combine MVPS and Malware Domains
ABE is only available in Firefox, while uBlock is only available in Chrome... As for the original question, why not use both?
well, as I stated, ABE is slowing me down, so if MVPS is as effective, I would eliminate ABE thus increasing speed
Missed that. MVPS should be enough for most ads. You could try Bluhell Firewall and FoolDNS, but I doubt they would add much more.
Hosts files are way faster, it's just a matter of looking the hostname component of a URL. The problem with hosts files is you can't easily un-break a web site, something possible with pattern-based filtering with exception filters support (ABE's filtering engine is actually ABP's filtering engine).
If the problem is "slows down my surfing", I am very skeptical about Bluhell Firewall. Multiple gigantic regexes are not the first solution which comes to mind to speed up thing, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the opposite.
anything wrong with using both? i use hostsman and and adblocking extension in opera, it doesn't seem to have an ill effects
You could also check out: what's your security setup these days. Lot's of good info there. https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/what-is-your-security-setup-these-days.111264/ You didn't say what Browser you're using - if IE, use TPL's & SpywareBlaster. Under Mozilla I use AdBlockPlus over ABE but that's user choice as both add-ons to the same thing. Most lists are really huge and unneeded in adblock. Here's what I have after a few months with Adblock & Easy List. Filters with at least 1 hit: 1343, with at least 10: 372, with 20: 239. EasyList total number of rules: 44000. You could try to remove after a month all filters with 0 hits to see how well your browsing will speed up.
Tried all main ad blockers after dumped Ad Muncher and anchored with Adguard which gives me the best results and the least impact on system.
Doesn't the list periodically update itself? Manually removed entries would just get added back wouldn't they?
I can't remember if it's on or off by default, but if it's not, you can enable it in the options menu (click on abe's icon - options - count filter hits). Open the filter preferences menu (ctrl+shift+f), actions, show filters (or ctrl+r). There's a column there with the number of hits. I have no idea. What I did is to simply copy & paste the filters with hits to a new list in the custom filters tab.
All of the TPL's on the EasyList site refresh automatically. https://easylist.adblockplus.org/en/ I suspect unless a filter rule is in place to prevent a removed entry from being replaced it would be replaced.
