Firefox's massive overhaul moves to beta

Great to see that this is being implemented directly. Note that the Perspectives extension for certificate validation has been available for some time:

Firefox 32 "final" is available on the Mozilla FTP site and also at MajorGeeks

 

Firefox was just fine around version 15 especially the layout and also the lightness. It seemed to get bulkier and superfluous after that and go downhill.

For instance the refresh icon was conveniently located in each tab but later had to go right to the other side of the page to refresh which was made worse by large resolutions and widescreen monitors. The refresh tab is now on the left but in a less good position.

They took something good and ruined it.

 

"Ruined"? You can (for instance) download a "refresh" icon from the extensions site and place it anywhere you want on the navigation bar.

 

Mozilla have pulled the release from the FTP as it's BETA. Major Geeks, well.
There's no current release notes nor is "32.0" appearing via Internal Update.

Yes, I see that the FTP folder is no longer accessible. The question is why was the file in the release folder in the first place? Note that when installed the Firefox "About" box simply say Firefox 32 and makes no reference to beta. I'm not saying your information is wrong, but I am saying that we should be able to trust what Mozilla posts on their own FTP site. As for the internal updater it's not uncommon for there to be some lag time.

Mozilla had intended for the FTP to be available for those that knew the consequences of running Alpha and pre-release software. Everyone looks at the FTP these days for "sneak" information on releases not ready for prime time. They've at least put a mechanism in place that tells you "We aren't quite finished qualifying Firefox 32.0 yet." when you point at the FTP.

Sites like Neowin and Major Greeks clearly violate user trust by posting BETA software and calling it FINAL
At least Neowin posted BETA release notes in lieu of "not available yet".

The amount of users that get duped into running BETA software instead of actual final releases in many cases is brought by sites mentioned wanting to drive traffic & and overzealous posters in Forums like this wanting to show they've got something to say when they're actually doing a disservice to the community.

I understand what you're saying, but that doesn't correspond with the labeling of the Mozilla FTP site folders. In the Firefox section each beta version has its own folder, such as ""Firefox 32.0b1" whereas the final version is simply "Firefox 32". As a rule that folder/file doesn't exist until the build is finalized. Assuming that you're correct this is the first time I've downloaded a file from a release folder that was not the actual release. I don't think it's unreasonable given the folder labeling scheme to expect the file in the folder not labeled as a beta to be the release version.

 

The Mozilla FTP has the D/L but it's against TOS to point at it here. You would have to ask Mozilla directly as to the numbering convention on the FTP as I rarely use it. It makes sense in a Mozilla kinda way.

For the record I did not point to the download - if by point you mean link to it - I simply said the download was available. Regarding the numbering convention used on the Mozilla FTP site, there is no need to ask about it as it is perfectly clear. While I understand that you prefer to wait for the official announcement I believe that Mozilla making the file available for download on their public server also constitutes an announcement.

Not strictly on topic but I updated my ESR24 to ESR31 (after backing up the old data), Also the possibility I may move back to the apid release, spent an hour or so restoring old theme as best as could, is now done reasonably well with exception of tabs that are too tall so take excess room up.

However I then wanted to see if ESR31 improved stuttering on a page that tests some scrolling images, very disappointed to see it immediatly crashes the browser, oh dear.

Anyone else can test this page?

I solved the gpu issue by disabling FXAA in NVidia global settings, but this build of firefox seems to have some odd issue where its consistently doing some bg processing every 8 secs or so as the cpu usage spikes when its idle or active every 8-13 seconds. This will cause stutters in scrolling etc. So I think I am going back to v24.
