I am new to video conversion. I have few videos 460p/720p. I want to convert them to 1080p.
Currently I am converting a 720p movie to 1080p with Freemake. I kept all the settings to default. Only selected 1920*1080p.
Does Freemake affects the quality of the video or the quality is not affected?
And currently the conversion process is going on & the laptop is making some noise sometimes, is it normal?

If you are switching a video to a higher resolution, there will ALWAYS be a loss in quality. No program can fill in the detail that did not exist at a lower resolution. Try taking a small picture, re-sizing it to a larger resolution, and you will see what I mean.

Why would you want to upscale? It does not magically improve the quality, nor do you need it once you just fullscreen the video.

Every time you convert something, the quality degrades. How much though depends on your settings, in which case default should be minimal.

The laptop making noises should be normal if it's just the sound of the fans

My Full HD TV has 3 options to play videos.
Original - 1920/1080p plays full screen
    Mode 1 - 1280/720p plays full screen
Mode 2 - lower than the above 2 plays full screen.

But few videos, 720p videos & even 1080p videos doesn't play full screen. I like watching videos full screen. So I thought will convert them with Freemake.

Is the quality loss big i.e if 720p videos are converted to 1080p with Freemake default settings?

I checked your thread "Alternative for Freemake Video Converter". You have good experience with Freemake.
Is the default setting good or can you suggest changes in settings for converting 720p to 1080p?

I read in your thread than videos more than 5 mins have Freemake promotional thing. I am using the latest Freemake.
Does the latest version 4.1.4.1 too gives promotional thing on the videos bigger than 5 mins?

What you can't change the aspect ratio in VLC or Media Player Classic?

    Don't know maybe I'm misunderstanding.

VLC - Video - Aspect Ratio

Media Player Classic - View - Video Frame - Override Aspect Ratio

I'm not sure how your TV works, so little help there. Are the video files not fully supported by your TV? If so, you could try converting them to MP4.

The default settings are fine, they copy the bitrate of your original file. The quality loss shouldn't be much bigger than expanding the video to full screen.

I personally change the audio settings to match the original file, but that's not really necessary.

I believe so, unless they changed it back.

I downloaded few hindi movie songs from youtube.
They have text like youtube/facebook, click here to watch more, etc... at the bottom black bar.
I have Freemake Video Converter Gold Pack
In the settings I have selected "Remove Black Bar"
Selected Video, selected original source & converted.
But either the top black bar is half removed or the bottom bar is half removed & the text youtube/facebook, etc... still appears half cut.
How to correctly remove black bars so the text at the bottom black bar are not there?

Manual cropping. Last time I checked Freemake still doesn't have that feature.

Oh hey, this reminds me of J_L's thread. =V

Yes, I checked but no manual cropping in freemake.
Any good free software that has black bar removal feature, manual crop too.

XMedia Recode (only manual with real-time preview), VidCoder (auto and manual), TEncoder (only manual). There are many actually.

MeGUI and staxrip, you can even do that without encoding the video stream.

Encoding sequence in XMedia Recode can be twisted indeed, but VidCoder and TEncoder shouldn't be too complicated. Although I admit it's cumbersome to not having real-time previewing.

Alright, if things hasn't changed much, ShanaEncoder should do.

    Thanxx Bro.
VidCoder was easy & portable too.
The auto crop didn't worked fine.
I set the crop settings & worked fine.
And the video I tried was 480p i.e 854*480, after crop it was 854*372, did it reduced due to crop?

With VidCoder I can convert to mp4 & mkv only, right?

By the way, is it lossless i.e crop with VidCoder doesn't affects the quality of the video?

Yes. If you don't want the video dimension goes funky set the anamorphic to "None" or "Custom" and change the video height to a more common one. Although in most cases it shouldn't be much of a problem so I recommend to avoid upscalling whenever possible.

Yep, because it uses HandBrake's engine. But since nobody encodes videos to AVI with XviD anymore these days I hardly consider it as a drawback. :)

AFAIK, heavy modifications (cropping, padding, rotating, flipping, hard-subbing, hard-watermarking etc) requires the video to be re-encoded and thus, there's quality loss in the process.

    Thanxx for the info.

Any good & easy software to cut & join videos? Portable would be good.

I use mkvtoolnix to remux videos sometimes.
There is a crop option in the mmg GUI, how to use it to crop videos?

MKVToolnix can be used to join videos. As for cutting, I believe most video converters support that feature. But if you insist to use a specific software for those purposes, try Yamb.

    How is this app?
    http://www.videotovideo.org/

When I try to run it, Bitdefender Free Active Virus Control detects it as suspicious & at the same time also detects regsvr32 in syswow64 folder as suspicious.
Is this app safe or malware?
At VT, no scanners detects it as malware.

    JFYI...
    - Softpedia's page of Video To Video Converter: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Encoders-Converter-DIVX-Related/Video-To-Video-Converter.shtml
    - Softpedia's page of Portable Video To Video Converter: http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/Multimedia/Video/Portable-Video-to-Video.shtml
    - VideoHelp's page of Video To Video Converter: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Video-to-Video-Converter

As long as you got it from the correct source, it should be safe. Do note that these days the word "safe" doesn't cover ad-supported software. :ninja:

    How is Avidemux?

I am looking for a free video converter that has crop & trimming i.e not splitter i.e commercial/scenes removal functions.
I couldn't find any that has both the functions. Couple has both the functions but complicated to use.
Avidemux has both the functions & easy to use but I dont know about the quality of the converted/encoded videos produced by Avidemux.

Currently I use Vidcoder that produces an excellent quality encoded videos.
How does Avidemux encodes compares with Vidcoder?
If Avidemux produces an excellent quality encodes then I would like to use it as it has both crop & trim easy to use functions & would be good to use 1 instead of 2 products.

Bad for converting. Bad for everything if you asked my personal opinion.
