Yes, you are right. If you installed no av version, the virus alert from clamav should not popup. To make sure, you may want to test it again to see whether the virus alert is from ClamAV or Universal AV. If you see ClamWin, then the scanning result is definitely from Universal AV. To be sure, you can refer to those virus alert screen shots which I had posted in my earlier post.

If you have installed the full version, you can select the "Disable Offline Antivirus" option at "Scan Settings", click on "Apply" and then reboot your computer.

hi sinlam, i do want protection from universal av, just not real time protection, if you are recommending that i uncheck both options then what is the point of having the 2 separate check boxes? is it possible to have on execute protection from universal av? if not, why not as the protection level would theoretically be the same no?

Thanks for the info. The new GUI looks kinda cool, and the Universal AV seems to be using mostly top quality AV engines, that´s nice. I will check it out on my new machine. :)

Guess what, I am so happy to see your response about you wanting the protection from Universal AV :)

The reason why I had shared with you about this is to explain how not to get the "At risk" status. Hmmm... may not be a good explanation... I should have checked with you on your requirement first.

Let me give you a brief explanation on when will Universal AV protection kick in.

If the real-time protection is enabled, there are two critical points that Universal AV real-time scanning will kick in:
    1. Immediately after a new (untrusted) file being created or installed.
    2. Immediately when an untrusted file is being executed.
If virus is found, users will be notified with the real-time Universal AV virus alert.

Let's say a user is running an application that is not found in the whitelist, it will prompt the user whether to trust and allow it to run. In the message prompt, you will also see the Universal AV scanning result. This helps the user to decide whether to trust or not to trust it. But this scan result will show regardless of whether the Universal AV real-time scan is enabled or not. This result is useful, especially when the real-time scanning is turned off, or when the user has accidentally closed the virus alert prompt from the real-time scanning.

    msgprompt.png

You can also do a Universal AV scanning by pointing at the application or executables that you wish to scan, do a right mouse click and then select the scan option. As long as you are connected to the Internet, Universal AV will perform the scan. But if you are offline, then the offline Antivirus will kick in to do the scan.

Hi Sinlam, could you add more statistics on how much files are scanner or are uploaded, I see that this is reset every day... will this information be available in the website for the paid version?
Anyway it would harm have to total for this 3 values. nº of files scanned, nº of file uploaded, total size of files uploaded.

hi sinlam, the problem is that i got the av alerts for a file which suggests that the above 2 points you made are not the only times files are being scanned on my pc. i installed SAP and a few seconds after whitelisting finished i got a false positive alert for a dormant file in my documents folder (no av version).

please could you explain what happens when i disable the following options on their own and together.

    - disable universal av
    - enable real-time scanning

    Hi guest,
Currently, the number of uploaded files and total size of uploaded files is counted for specific machine on a per day basis. This is to make sure that the file upload does not exceed the daily upload limit that is set by the user. That is why it is being reset everyday. It is actually just a simple tracking and it only has the record for one day. We currently don't store the history of those numbers in a database.

No, this information is not in the SecureAPlus Account Portal. The information it has now is the specific infected files, specific infected machines and detected av engines. We will add in more statistics over the time but not immediate as our current focus is in building up the SecureAge Management Server which collects log for threat analysis and centralized the whitelist control and management of trusted programs for enterprise users.

SecureAPlus is targeting at both the novice users and advanced users. It is good to display a lot of statistical information but we need to consider that the information that we provide can be easily understood by novice users. Unlike advanced users, their key concern is mainly whether their machine is infected or not. Displaying information like file upload and total size of files uploaded may confuse them.

Nevertheless we will keep your suggestion into consideration and we will see how we can add this in the statistics somehow in the future enhancement.

Sorry, it is my fault. I forget to mention that after the whitelisting is complete, the file hashes will be uploaded to the Universal AV server for scanning. If virus is detected, a virus alert will appear. So the scanning result that you see is from Universal AV and not the offline av. We now called this as Full System Scan instead of initial background whitelisting that we used to call it because besides whitelisting, it also includes the scanning by Universal AV.

In the no AV version, you can have the following settings:

    1. Disable Universal AV - If you select this option, you will notice that it will automatically unselect the "Enable real-time scanning" option. This means that since the user have chosen not to have Universal AV protection, there will of course be no real-time scanning.

    2. Enable Real-time Scanning - If you select this option, you will notice that it will automatically unselect the "Disable Universal AV" option. This means that since the users want real-time protection from Universal AV, then the Universal AV should not be disabled. So Universal AV will do the continuous background scanning of all the executables from the user's computer as well as real-time scanning of newly installed / created files or untrusted files.

    3. Unselect Disable Universal AV and Real-time Scanning options - This means that Universal AV will only do the continuous scanning of all the executables from the user's computer.

Hope this clarifies. If not, please feel free to ask again :)

    thank you for clarifying

unfortunately i still do not fully understand. in note 1, you mention being able to turn off the realtime scanning but in note 3, you say that the universal av is still active regardless of what i untick. if i cant disable the universal AV then why is there a check box suggesting to me that i can disable it?

why are there 2 ticks if ticking/unticking one affects the other? shouldnt their only be a single option? if its due to emphasis on consequences of the user then surely a hover description would make more sense?

please note that i only want to get the to bottom of how this program works as i think it has huge potential and might get me using a realtime protection system again

Hi treehouse, sorry to confuse you further. The confusion is due to how we name the options. I did a simple test yesterday with a few of my campus friends and they are equally confused too. We will re-look into how to present this in a way that can be easily understood by all users. We must also thank you for asking all these questions as this truly makes us realize that the term we use confuse users a lot :)

Hmm.... ok let's start all over again and let me try to explain to you in this manner.

    Description of Universal AV
    1. Universal AV with no real-time protection - Scans all the executables on your computer continuously in the cloud.
    2. Universal AV with real-time protection - Scans all the executables on your computer continuously in the cloud + Immediately scans any newly installed / created executables or immediately scans when an untrusted application is being executed.

    Which options to choose
    1. If you only want protection from Universal AV but do not want any real-time scanning by Universal AV, you don't select any of the options as seen in the screenshot below.

    uav_only.png

    2. If you want Universal AV protection and real-time scanning by Universal AV, then you select only "Enable Real-time" scanning.

    uav_realtime.png

    3. If you don't want any protection from Universal AV and don't want the real-time scanning by Universal AV, then you select the "Disable Universal AV" option.

    no_uav.png

Please feel free to ask again if you still don't understand :)

Could you add an option to report FP's? do you have a way to analyze and use this information?

Now that the program looks like is working perfectly what is the roadmap you have planned?

Our focus for the next few months:

    1. Major focus: To build up the logs and Whitelist management in SecureAge Management Server for Enterprise. This should be ready in about 3 months' time. Once it is ready, we will invite interested beta testers to test it.
    2. Based on some of the previous request, we will also be working on a feature to compact the whitelist for SecureAPlus. This will remove the old whitelist and reduce the whitelist size.
    3. A webpage to submit the false positive.
    4. Other enhancements.

    Hi guys,

We are pleased to announce the release of SecureAPlus Version 3.2.1.

In this version, it includes the following bugs fixes and enhancements:

    1. Fixed - The last Complete Scan's date is not updated at times.
    2. Fixed - Unable to apply the setting to enable both Universal AV and Offline Antivirus with no real-time scanning.
    3. To minimize user's confusion, the names of the Antivirus Settings options have been changed from "Disable Universal AV" to "Enable Universal AV" and from "Disable Offline Antivirus" to "Enable Offline Antivirus"
    4. In order to make the "Good News" message prompt less intrusive to the users, its size has been reduced significantly and the duration of its stay on-screen has been shortened to 15 seconds.
    5. Add the file compression capability to Universal AV file upload in order to optimize the Internet bandwidth usage.

For more information about the latest changes or to download SecureAPlus v3.2.1, please visit https://secureaplus.secureage.com/Main/secureaplus_download.php.

If you already have version 3.2 installed on your computer and you did not change the default software update setting, your existing version will be updated to version 3.2.1 automatically upon your next reboot of your computer.

If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to post it here.

    Cheers,
    sinlam

Full system scan only runs after successful installation of SecureAPlus and it is only a one-time process. It is strongly recommended to complete the entire full system scan process to ensure your computer is fully protected. This process comprises of the background initial whitelisting process, uploading of file hashes of exe, dll, msi and java script to the Universal AV Server and scanning of all the exe, dll, msi and java files by the multiple AV engines at Universal AV server.

This process runs in the background and you can actually continue the normal usage of your computer. However, we also give the users the option to stop the process temporarily. You can do the following:

    1. Click on "Pause".

    fullsystemscan_1.png

    2. Select how long you want to pause the scan and then click "Yes".

    fullsystemscan_2.png

You can also choose to resume the scan by clicking on "Resume".

    fullsystemscan_3.png

You can exit from this Full System Scan window as it will not affect the scanning process. To check the status of the scan or to launch this window again, simply click on SecureAPlus tray icon.

Note: The full system scan will automatically resume upon the next reboot of your computer.

i got the popup scan result after the program updated to 3.2.1 so technically its not a one time after install process. i suppose once after every update isn't too intrusive. thanks for explaining.

I believe you are referring to this popup? This is the scanning result of Universal AV. It performs continuous scanning automatically and upon every reboot of your computer, it will display either this popup if no virus is found or a red popup if virus is detected.

    gd_news_100x.png

Full System Scan is considered as one-time process as you only need to whitelist your computer and upload hashes only once. Universal AV scanning is continuous and automatic because a previously undetectable virus may become detectable at a later date.

ClamWin is one of the cloud engines.
The local would be ClamAV if I'm not mistaken.
    (pretty confusing, I must admit...)

Hi treehouse786, thank you for your feedback on the virus alert message prompt :) and sorry for the confusion it has caused you. We will work on the virus alert message prompt to reduce any further confusion.

First of all, let me apologise for not explaining clearly to you about the difference between continuous scanning and real-time scanning earlier on. Let me try to explain starting from "full system scan".

SecureAPlus Full System Scan - The full system scan will start after the successful installation of SecureAPlus and is only a one-time process. This process comprises of :
    1. background initial whitelisting process;
    2. uploading of file hashes of exe, dll, msi and java script to the Universal AV Server; and
    3. scanning of all the exe, dll, msi and java files by the multiple AV engines at Universal AV server.
    4. After scanning is complete, you will see a message prompt informing you either "no threats are found" or "threats are found", as seen in the screen shots below.

    gd_news_100x.png

    fullsysscan_alert1.png

Universal AV Continuous Scanning - All the executables on your computer are scanned continuously and automatically by 11 antivirus in the cloud. As soon as a virus is detected, SecureAPlus will immediately notify the user with a virus alert message prompt. Since scanning is performed at Universal AV server and not on user's computer, it will not caused any slow down on the pc performance or caused any system conflict. If you select "Enable Universal AV", it will perform the continuous and automatic scan.

    enableuav.png

Universal AV Real-time Scanning - It immediately scans any newly installed / created executables or immediately scans when an untrusted application is being executed. If virus is found, users will be notified with a virus alert message prompt. This can be disabled by unchecking the "Enable Real-time Scanning", just like what you did.

    disable_realtime_scan2.png

Hope this helps. If you need further clarification, please feel free to ask.
