Oh wow... Holy macaroni Batman. Look at the memory usage figures!

And that is exactly the kind of memory usage I see on 2000, XP, and 7. This puts a new spin on "Windows rot." Why yes, if you install a ton of software that uses the registry, and don't have enough memory to prevent parts from being paged out, then your system will slow down, even if none of the installed applications are actually running. Yowza.

You're right (d'oh!). But that doesn't change the basic outcome; i.e. that installing software that makes use of the registry will result in more memory being used by the kernel, even if the software is not actually running.

I only read the first few lines, but the first few lines put me off as the registry has not been loaded into completely into memory since XP/2003
Its loaded on demand using the cache manager. This was needed so that terminal server can load lots of users without running out of memory.

At the beginning there is warning: "This article is work in progress so don't rely on it being completely correct."

You mean as of XP/2003, or as of Vista?

Wow. So much for my thoughts on this then.

    That is a huge inaccuracy.

That memory usage is mostly related to superfetch. My used Windows 8.1 x64 takes only about 450MB at startup, about three times less than after a clean setup. :doubt:

Do you have Superfetch service disabled on Windows 8.1.1? I found different advice about disabling it.

That basically depends, if you trust Windows to decide, what software you prefer running or you want to decide it for yourself and possibly increase performance.

On that one starting point, I've not looked at the rest...

I meant on that point specifically, since that would basically constitute a weird sort of memory leak. But yeah.
