Hi Pete, How can one tell that there is an upgraded PE? If you have the time, could you please give step-by-step guidelines how to do that (if needed at all)? Thanks!
I don't know for sure; I am still learning how the PE Rescue Disk works. Details about the update say that Restore now skips bad sectors so the version on the rescue disk should also need to be updated. I think if an update is needed you just rebuild the rescue media using the wizard. I don't think you need the boot menu (which I have not enabled).
To answer the question about the need for new rescue media is simple. Boot into it and see if the version and build number are the same as the desktop. I don't build new rescue media unless there is a major change to it like there was in the last version. If all you use it for is restore I would suspect it doesn't matter, but for actual imaging it might. I did rebuild this time. Pete
You are correct in that you don't need the boot menu.. but once you've used it you will never turn back. It is way to cool. So now I reserve the CD's for total and complete failure, which I personally have never had happen, at least not recently. Pete
Downloaded new version. First did a repair, but it still crashed. Then reinstalled (leaving existing settings and logs), and it crashed again. Submitted ticket to Macrium, but so far, no solution given.
SOLVED!! Emsisoft Anti-Malware was the culprit. I had to whitelist the Macrium application and service.

A question: I did run the upgrade on Win 7. When I had rebooted and started the Reflect "preboot menu" (PE5), I noticed that the version there was still telling me 5.3.7086 (the previous version). I rebooted and started Reflect, and then I made a bootable PE5 CD/DVD. After that I rebooted again into the "preboot menu", and now the "preboot menu" was also showing version 5.3.7100. Is this normal? Is this the way you guys do it? Thanks in advance!
Sometimes when I am just remaking the preboot, I'll select ISO instead of a CD. In the case of this last update, since there was no big impact on PE, I didn't bother doing anything with it. I take each update as a separate case when it comes to PE. Pete
Hi Pete, Thanks. Sorry, I don't understand this. Maybe it was me or any settings by me, but as I posted in reply # 337 my preboot menu did not show version 5.3.7100 but the previous one 5.3.7086. Only after I made a new bootable CD/DVD PE-5 , the preboot menu did show version 5.3.7100.
When you make the Preboot, you can chose between making a CD or an ISO, which can be later used to burn to a CD. If I want to rebuild the Preboot environment, but don't need the CD, I will select ISO. Then I just delete the ISO When you update the windows version, the preboot isn't rebuilt automatically. I don't bother rebooting the Preboot every time. Just I don't feel it is needed. Pete
Uploaded version 5.3.7100 this morning. New update, but same problem of program crashing immediately. Back to version 5.2. I've not found anything on Wilders or Macrium that suggests any manual fix for the problem. Have I missed something? Thanks.
Perhaps try as a form of troubleshooting disabling everything running in real time apart from Macrium and then if Macrium works, re-enabling real time apps one by one.
I don't have Emsisoft. I use Comodo and Malwarebytes Anti Malware 2. I've excluded the Macrium folder in Malwarebytes and have identified Reflect's executable and service files to be trusted in Comodo. And when I revert back to version 5.2, everything works great. Go figure. Thanks for your inquiry and help.
I just run Windows Defender on all my Windows 8 computers without any problems whatsoever. I have never needed anything fancy with malware. Common sense has worked well for me over the years and have NEVER had to remove any malware or virus.

That is interesting. I am using Win 8.1 x64....maybe that is the difference. I just could not get Macrium to run without immediately crashing after the 7086 update until I received this fix from Macrium support. They advised that they have alerted Emsisoft to this problem.
