Online armor premium (30days)v7 and kmplayer with opencandy

Hello,

I am running online armor on xp pro sp3 and it seems kmplayer is now bundled with open candy and no option to untick its installation.

With this in mind i have blocked ocsetup (opencandy) during installation yet i still get an advert

Problems to fix
1) Running kmplayer in the start menu after installation i get a "member not found" error.
it still launches kmplayer however
2) dragging and dropping a video file into the kmplayer window brings up an "acess violation at address 000 read of address 0000xx" error.

and i have to terminate kmplayer in task manager with no video being played

If i just double click a registered file type (same file i dragged) it works without any of these errors.

So what can i do to fix the 2 problems above?
and also how can i lock kmplayer down further? (since it now bundles open candy with it thus i dont trust is like i did older versions.)

BTW zemana is the only other security software installed on this xp install (no av etc yet)

 

They are temporary files, deleting them should be fine IMO.

You know what? If I were you I'll just drop KMPLayer and use something else.

 

yep

if you must use a Korean player go with PotPlayer
it's from the same developer but much more evolved

I would leave Asian software alone though
and go with good old trusted MPC-HC
or its fork MPC-BE which I'm currently using and recommend

Slightly off-topic, but the op has raised an interesting point of Open Candy having no opt-out option in the install wizard of the software it is attached to.

I have noticed this is a common pattern of no opt-out as there are with some tool bars, etc.

This is a b****r as there's some software I would really like to use, but now comes with OC.

As I remember reading one EULA open candy says they do a once-off "data-gathering" (my paraphrase) of the computer and send that off to their servers. This is a temporary file that 'evaporates" (my paraphrase) after, and not until, a reboot.

I speculated - what if one used CCleaner, and Bleach Bit, or, if necessary, file assassin, before the reboot....
Would that work to overcome open candy's privacy intrusion and delete that temporary file before it sends out data?
{Of course, all software installation is done off-line, and under supervision of EAM}.

I was going to try, and may still, with regard to a certain video editor, but so far it seems a little bit too much trouble.

Alternatively, a method discussed in Gizmo's "Best Free Audio-Video Format Conversion Program" regarding a particularly good application was to install via the command line, and to use a switch.

As the reviewer says...a lot of work.

It's actually on-topic IMO. But yes, I also came across some bundled software which didn't show me the option to not installing junks. They seem to only install their own components at first but, upon a sudden your homepage has been changed.

Yes i can use another player but i do like this one and i am using it as a learning experience with OA.
I still would like to fix the problem nevertheless partly as i am trialling Online Armor to see if i can replace outpost.

Well, OA already prevent unauthorized changes to the HOSTS file so there's no need to worry about that I think. Perhaps you'd want to block KMPLayer from having internet access, both outbound and inbound. There are other adjustable additional permission restrictions but I forgot what are those, but I think you already know what to do anyway. Also, since you're on XP, I suggest to put KMPLayer and other threat-gate programs under RunSafer.

I am partly using KMPLayer as a way of learning outpost which is why i want to get rid of the drag to window error in case i need it for something else in the future.
Yes it is easy to double click but i can only have one player with one filetype at a time.
I will want to drag and drop other video files into videolan and potplayer (as is suggested for replacement) hence i need to get them to work without allowing kmplayer too many permissions.
