Can you set it to Manual? That way it'll only start when something needs it. It might not stop when you close Word, you'll just have check, but at next startup it should be stopped.

Microsoft may not allow disabling the service.

You can create and modify this registry key:

This will shut down service after it is not needed. You just put in the number of seconds you want service to stop after it is not needed an more. I've set my to 5 seconds.

    Here it is:
Copy paste it to notepad, save as .reg file and import in registry.

In most cases this registry tweak works. When I close Outlook service stops. Sometimes it stays in background but usually next time I open/close office program it stops.

I've used this trick on Windows 7 x64 and now use it on Windows 8.1 x64 and it works fine for me. What Office do you have installed? I use Office 2010 x86.

I don't have Office 2013 with this service installed, so I can't test it for myself.
