And here is EIS 9.0 with memory optimization enabled:

Of course the very moment I start an application that needs to be scanned, memory usage jumps up as the PE signatures need to be accessed:

    upload_2014-6-11_11-2-28.png

It will stay that way until the memory optimization thread kicks in again and swaps the data out to disk. In general, this is completely normal behavior and has been that way in every version that has this particular feature. If you run an application that needs to be scanned on the 8.1 system, you will notice the memory jumps up to similar heights as EAM/EIS 9.0 does. The only difference between those two screenshots of EAM 8.1 and EAM/EIS 9.0 is, that in the first case you looked at memory usage right after the memory optimization thread did its thing and in the later you looked at memory usage right after a large portion of the signatures were touched, which happens just by running an application as the PE file signatures are by far the largest part of the signature database.

We are comparing two systems that are like chalk and cheese, i.e. my 2GB of memory XP system and your much newer system with heaps of memory. No contest, so your system shows negligible difference in those screenshots of yours. ;) I defer to your wisdom on memory allocation.

Actually I am not comparing my system with your system at all. I just want to stress the point I made earlier that the value you see in your task manager if you have memory optimization enabled will be all over the place depending on when the memory optimization thread was triggered last and depending on what you have been doing since the thread was last triggered. That makes any kind of comparisons between 8.1 and 9.0 impossible. In your last screenshot, the memory optimization just made its pass and no signatures have been touched since then because there was no file that had to be scanned by the File Guard. Otherwise such a low value is impossible. Same in my first screenshot. My second screenshot demonstrates what happens if you trigger a file scan in the File Guard by executing a program that hasn't been executed in the session before. Memory usage sky rockets, as the signatures have to be put back into RAM. It will stay on that level until eventually the memory optimization thread kicks in again. Of course if you happen to look at that value then, it looks like it is consuming so much more memory than 8.1 is.

You can try it on your system as well. Wait until the memory usage is way down to less than 10 MB in your task manager. Then start an application you haven't started before. You will see exactly what I am talking about.

Still, myself, I prefer it when EIS uses all memory it needs in order to run smoothly. Disabling optimization was the first thing I did when I installed EIS Beta. On modern computers lack of RAM is very uncommon, if not unheard of.

No doubt there. Especially since Windows will reduce the EIS service's memory consumption automatically if the memory is needed elsewhere.

We just released a new beta build today. Version number is 9.0.0.4085 for both Emsisoft Anti-Malware as well as Emsisoft Internet Security. If you have beta updates enabled under "Settings"/"Updates" the new version will be installed automatically.

Changes in version 9.0.0.4085 compared to the previous version:

    • Improved overall performance and startup time.
    • Several minor GUI improvements.
    • Improved Surf Protection notification windows for better usability.
    • Improved Behavior Blocker alert handling.
    • Improved time input boxes for AM/PM format.
    • Improved support for high DPI screens.
    • Improved updater.
    • Fixed bug in logging settings.
    • Fixed potential crash when user logs off during an active scan.
    • Data grid column widths are now saved.
    • Cleaned up installer.
    • Improved overall stability.
    • Fixed a read out of bounds issue triggered by some applications. We would like to thank David Major and Christopher Lonnen of Mozilla for their invaluable help of tracking down this issue.

Fabian, could you tell more about "paranoid mode"? I suppose that option is similiar to another AV's (like Bitdefender IS). What kind of behaviour will be indicated after switching on that option?

It mostly disables a lot of the whitelisting mechanisms that are in place.

Ok, I turned this option on. I'm curious, what practical differences it will make.

If you still have the Emsisoft Anti-Malware Network integration enabled, not that much. You will just see a lot more cloud requests popping up that just return that the file is okay so it is allowed automatically.

I don't care about superb improvements if still I would be redirected to bloody emsisot.ru in russian, when I TYPE "EMSISOT.COM" I will uninstall it and that's it. Don't you have a clue who are European community countries or not o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O

I have also noticed that updates are like a zillion times faster than on v8.
    Awesome!

    Same here....
Fabian, all your hard work is paying off. Version 9.0.0.4085 is remarkably light and smooth. Any E.T.A. on the final version?

Why is the ram so high?
I have a tiny suggestion... the tray icon is kinda small compared to my other icons, could it be enlarged just a tad?

EAM 9.0 will be released soon. EIS 9.0 will take a bit longer as we still have a few issues we want to fix first.

You are most likely using EIS. EIS 9.0 will stay in beta testing for quite a bit longer than EAM 9.0.

Memory usage looks about normal directly after start. It takes some time until the memory optimization kicks in. If memory optimization is disabled, this is about the level it will stay unless no other application needs the memory.
