AV companies, the frustration never ceases.

Why is the security business so rife with bad decisions, and fail products?

Either a product slows a machine, causes instability, or installs extra garbage. Regardless it seems like all of them have endless frustrations associated with them. None of them are perfect, and how is that normal, or acceptable? Maybe that is why people here are 'incessantly' searching for the 'next thing'.

I tried the latest Panda2014, and it was rife with issues. Most notably an incessant 30% CPU spike on a clean machine. But installation of some idiot password manager not even tied to the product, a broken uninstaller that leaves massive traces and crashes.. Do these companies even have QA teams?

Then I go over to AVG, and find a girl having an orgasm on their front page, which causes me to quickly leave the page, as it's the most unprofessional thing I have seen lately. Who are they trying to appeal to? 19 year old virgins?

It's like this business is in their teenage years or something, and the professionalism is an afterthought. Bring out a lite, spartan but attractive, and gimmick free AV and conquer the world. Why does this simple business logic evade these people?

Or they're trying to build a AV/security suite that does everything, but ends up doing everything terribly (jack of all trades, master of none).

    wat
Sounds like something John McAfee would have, if he still owned McAfee.

Sounds like the current evolutionary stage of this nonsense. Software - generally speaking is stable, and well done these days, but not this security stuff. It's like they are stuck in the 1990s. I'm close to running a VM and just rebooting if I ever encounter an error, and being done with this rubbish.

Wow? I installed it in less than 14 seconds. Within 60 seconds scans had been run (with Avira and the Cloud Engines), tuneup was done, startup was optimized, and I rebooted. No nags, no nonsense. Quite remarkable, but what is the catch? 360 reports an overall 18 second boot time from 'cold bios', and is tracking boot times, and notifying of changes.

Seems to me this is what an AV should be all about.. Not these nonsense toolbars, password managers, cloud backups, and endless rubbish we are dealing with lately. Testing is in order, but so far it's quite fantastic.

    Boot time with 360 installed WITH Avira engine operating. Remembering the horrendous Avira boot times;

Here's a video of me testing it just now from cold windows 8.1 shutdown. :thumb:

Good Morning! Doc!...I concure 100% with your lamenting security software vendors. Believe it or not I just installed KIS 2014 I.S.Suite in tandem with AppGuard...which in my opinion is just about bulletproof. The only add on that Kaspersky offers...which I find useful is the Safe Money for on line banking. But I'm really surprised at how light and nimble KIS Is! I purchase a license at the Download Crew for $19.95...can't beat that. This is a combo that I feel are proverbial keepers for my system. Have a Super Groovy Weekend. Sincerely...Securon

I recommend the Internet Security not the Total Security for a fact that the proactive of Internet Security is much better than the Total Security. Also cruelsister mention that the addition of Avira Engine did nothing to boost the detection rates. So that is why I am sticking to Internet Security at the moment.

Was a strong Kaspersky supporter until I found that it took them at least 6 months form release to stabilise a product. But yet their business lines are much more stable compare to their consumer lines. If they can release a stable product for their business line, I don't see a reason for them not able to release a stable version for thier consumer line. One needs to wait minimum of 6 months from date of release to get a stable version. Sick of that.

Same.. I cannot fathom why it takes them so long to stabilize builds as well, and the product quality seems to vary 'dramatically' from one build to another. I lose patience with that.

Is this "orgasm-girl" is still up ? All I see is a girl using a laptop, browsing facebook (from what I can make of the blurry image)? Granted her eyes look closed which is weird but I suppose it is more bad photagraphy than anything else.

Its all the wilders security forums readers DOS the website looking for this girl. :>
Havent visited AVG for a long time but i am impressed she can do it with no hands :)

Back on topic; Its no surprise that security suites from the big boys are unstable and slow the machine down.
They are constantly adding extras on top of virus protection in an effort to keep up with the other big companies doing the same.
Its like the "loudness wars" in the music industry.

It just puts people off buying their products.
This is where the small guys can make some money by offering what the better read computer users what they want.

I use mainly small company security nowadays unless you call agnitum big?

Good Morning! Your correct LunarWolf...Kaspersky has a history from the Consumer side of offering ongoing updates to a supposedly stable product...similar to a continuous Beta Period of Development. All I know is it's running tickety boo on my system at the moment...and it does provide Stellar Protection...Truth being that's my Primary Consideration in chosing Kaspersky...or any Security App for that matter. Sincerely...Securon

That´s why I ditched AV´s 8 years ago. They can´t offer 100% protection, and are too bloated most of the time.

Real time AV´s have even caused major problems for consumers and businesses (killing PC´s by faulty malware detection). They are just not worth it, at least not for me. I do think they can protect less security savvy people (90% of the world). :)

EDIT: Of course I´m still using VirusTotal, you just can´t beat it.

I use avast file shields only now along with WFC and MBAM, I've come to the conclusion that I don't think there's really a need for all the security tweaks and softwares that the paranoid security experts argue with each other about here on Wilders...In fact its more amusing watching them out-tech each other with jargon....Still happy to say I've never had a flag or warning about any virus or malware I haven't expected in the past 6 years.

In general no, however i did make a tweak settings file for avast!:
    http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-protection-tweaks/

It doesn't change protection that much as it changes interface and feedback. I've tuned it to be the least intrusive as possible. It just updates itself in the background and doesn't make any noises or popups unless necessary. I used to love all the popups, animations and sounds, but over time they got annoying, especially since i run my system over night with music and i don't need warnings screaming at me while i sleep. I use such setup for ages and it works so well i've decided to release it as tweak configuration file for avast! so others can use it as well.

'Strange' things have been happening with 360 installed, and I am close to removal of it. Random system shutdowns, some odd slowdowns, and lag issues. Screen flashes, etc. All of this is timed, coincidentally since it's installation, so I am pretty much going to assume that's the issue. These are clean machines, and that's about all that is running other than Adguard.

It drives me nuts to install bloatware, 360 isn't bloatware but I am untrusting of Chinese 'anything' these days so it doesn't give me comfort running it. It just bothers me that other AV products have become such bloated messes. :thumbd:
