Yes! That's a great article. I've passed that around to several people and it's definitely worth the read. Fascinating, really. We all remember the whole "NSA Key" dustup with Microsoft and Windows. People were called "conspiracy theorists"...but to me, there's no doubt at all that the leaked file WAS indeed exactly what it said it was. Reading that list made a few things click into place.

I'm not sure I understand the meaning of your post. Are you referring to the fact that despite the massive NSA operation we were apparently totally taken by surprise by the abilities of ISIS, the weakness of the Iraqi armed forces, or the extent of the ISIS plans to takeover a huge portion of Iraq?

With regard to your signature, i.e. The Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security, the singlemost dumb idea in Computer Security/Design is definitely the idea of a Registry!

I won't argue with that. Storing data and settings in the registry is largely responsible for turning Windows into spyware. An adversary or investigator can use those few registry files to determine everything you've ever installed or run on that machine. The NT systems only made the problem worse. They took away the ability to natively back up the registry, restore earlier copies of it, and the ability to edit it free of interference from Windows while making it a storehouse of everything you and your system does.

Huge volumes of private emails, phone calls, and internet chats are being intercepted by the National Security Agency with the secret cooperation of more foreign governments than previously known, according to newly disclosed documents from whistleblower Edward Snowden.


The classified files, revealed today by the Danish newspaper Dagbladet Information in a reporting collaboration with The Intercept, shed light on how the NSA’s surveillance of global communications has expanded under a clandestine program, known as RAMPART-A, that depends on the participation of a growing network of intelligence agencies.


It has already been widely reported that the NSA works closely with eavesdropping agencies in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia as part of the so-called Five Eyes surveillance alliance. But the latest Snowden documents show that a number of other countries, described by the NSA as “third-party partners,” are playing an increasingly important role – by secretly allowing the NSA to install surveillance equipment on their fiber-optic cables.


The NSA documents state that under RAMPART-A, foreign partners “provide access to cables and host U.S. equipment.” This allows the agency to covertly tap into “congestion points around the world” where it says it can intercept the content of phone calls, faxes, e-mails, internet chats, data from virtual private networks, and calls made using Voice over IP software like Skype...."

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved an effort to rein in government surveillance by passing an amendment that attempts to block so-called "backdoor" searches by the NSA.
The late night vote on the amendment, whose main sponsor was Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), passed 293-123 with overwhelming bipartisan support and little debate


Massie and amendment co-sponsors Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) called their proposal "a sure step toward shutting the back door on mass surveillance," and stated that it would "reinstate an important provision that was stripped from the original USA FREEDOM Act to further protect the Constitutional rights of American citizens. Congress has an ongoing obligation to conduct oversight of the intelligence community and its surveillance authorities.' "
