Please detail any alternatives to Truecrypt that are free and open-source. Please detail what operating system they work on, the type of encryption eg container files/partitions etc. Also document if it is free or not and open-source or not.

We need to be looking for alternatives, hopefully this dedicated thread should help draw focus for people looking to find alternatives.

I highly recommend everyone "watch" this thread.

It looks like Free OTFE is discontinued? The site is dead.

Right. But maybe it could be forked.

I recall seeing the former developer's name (Sarah Dean) in something that I read yesterday about the TrueCrypt situation. Perhaps someone knows what happened?

    hi

The Sarah Dean sites are dead, but her products can be found on various servers, Softpedia included.
Veracrypt is based on TrueCrypt, it mitigates brute force attacks by algorithm enhancements, but does not protect for instance against RAM based attacks (cold boot, DMA etc).

That sounds interesting. However if the sites are dead, does that mean they are in the same boat as TrueCrypt? Really what we need is another supported presently developed free solution. Do you have any more details as to the status of that?

Blowfish advanced CS 2.57.122 for 98 through XP.
    Scramdisk 3.01R3 for 9X systems.
Neither is being developed any more, but neither has ever been broken.

Scramdisk might be limited to 9X systems but Blowfish advanced CS is not. I don't know if it's compatible with Win7 or not. It does run on XP.

Really though, we need up to date and actively developed options as alternatives rather than other software in the same boat as TrueCrypt.

The same Windows XP that's pushing 15 years old and just lost all support from its manufacturer, leaving it open to essentially every zero-day?

I think a number of the alternatives mentioned in these two links are still pretty active. A number of them have updates stamped this year.

    That depends on
1, How much value you place on MS support.
2, How much you believe all their zero-day rhetoric.
3, How much you trust MS after admitting NSA involvement.
Each has to decide these things for themselves. Besides, this is all off topic in this thread. There's at least 2 other threads that are current for these issues.

I'm thinking of starting an office pool on the outcome of this very interesting situation.

I've been using the same 40GB TC v6 container file (mountable as a drive) since 2008 in XP and W7x64 to store my personal files and proprietary data. Beginning with v7, the portable version works just great, too.

Right now, I don't see a currently maintained Windows portable, free and container file (not full disk only) alternative. Even though it's just so convenient, portable can be dismissed if it boils down to that.

But if iSEC Partners' part two audit is hopefully as encouraging as the first, I don't see why anyone can't continue on with TC v7.1a. Well, until it maybe stops working in Windows 9. Or ten... :)

Someone, please, correct me if I'm wrong...but Sarah passed away a year or two ago, isn't that right?

I'm sticking with my hardware encryption (not using TPM) and Truecrypt 7.1a combo.

I cannot do anything about my backup data drives until I have fresh drives to be able to transfer data to use different software on the old ones. But I am now in the process of encrypting my c:\ system partition with DriveCryptor to give it a try. I have a forum post out and an email to the developer asking if it is still maintained. Wikipedia sayys it is no longer maintained so I would like to know for sure. If it is not, I will promptly decrypt and yet again look for something else.I just hate the idea of thieves getting personal information like going through someone's bin who has no shreadder. But by the same token, I do not feel as good about TrueCrypt now due to what has transpired.

Does anyone here know if DriveCryptor is maintained? Perhaps the wiki is wrong. I mean it was updated new years day this year.

Does it seem odd that the TC page would recommend switching to a Microsoft product that so many many people think is not a good choice?

Well, we have no idea (as far as I know) what the real/actual/genuine TrueCrypt developer(s) think/thought of Microsoft products. Maybe they were (for whatever reasons) totally committed/locked to Win XP, but would have been totally thrilled to use BitLocker if that had been possible. Maybe a BitLocker replacement for Win XP was in fact their only goal.

And yes, it does seem odd. Time will tell, I suppose ;)

Last word I found in the DiskCryptor forum ntldr said the project was still alive but he didn't have time to add new features.

Also, if you're feeling trusting (I'm not.. but then I'm continuing with Truecrypt for a while, my laptop's Win7 version doesn't support BitLocker, and I'll be wanting to test anything else inside a VM before I even think of swapping), the posted Truecrypt 7.2 versin claims to do in place decryption that 7.1a can't.
