Hi, A new computer has arrived. Win 7 Pro, Dutch. I am completely new to SSD and Win 7, and have to learn everything from scratch ... It has one SSD and one HDD internal. The SSD is a Samsung 840 Pro 512 GB. The shop installed it. Are there any things or settings I need to check and/or install with respect to the SSD? If so, where to check and/or from where to install? All advices would be more than welcome and most appreciated! If you need more info, please let me know. Big thanks in advance!
Start by checking if disk defrag is disabled for the SSD. If Windows 7 was installed onto the SSD, everything should be fine.
Hi J_L, Thank you! I feel very ashamed, but I don't even know where to look in Win 7 to check whether defrag is disabled for the SSD. Yes, Win 7 was installed by the shop on the SSD.
See if AHCI mode is enable in the BIOS (and not ide mode) cause you'll get far better performance Run AS SSD Benchmark and see if the SSD is properly aligned. See: http://www.overclock.net/t/1226963/how-to-properly-re-align-your-ssd-hdd-partitions Make sure you don't have CCleaner set to overwrite files (it'll just wear down the SSD) Make sure the SSD is running the latest firmware and drivers: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/windows-7-and-ssds-setup-secrets-and-tune-up-tweaks_p2/2910 Here's another guide to look over: http://www.overclock.net/t/929553/win-7-ssds-setup-and-secrets It's important though that you set them up right. If not- they won't run as fast as they could and won't last as long as they could.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/improve-performance-defragmenting-hard-disk#1TC=windows-7 If they installed it correctly, AHCI and alignment shouldn't be a problem.
If you have a Creative sound card avoid SSD-s unless you want to ditch the great sound cards they still make There is a bug related to SSD-s that shows up for some. Speed decreases over time also ,at least on mine.
Hi J_L, Veeshush, Sm3K3R, Rasheed187, Thank you! (I hope that I didn't forgot to thank others). Things will go very slow (as they usually do on my end ...), and I have to read all the advices which are very much appreciated!
@ FanJ, you didn´t respond to my question, I would like to know you´re PC specs, if that´s OK with you.
Hi Rasheed187, I guess that I owe you guys to do that and Bill would also like me to do that. More or less a custom build; no brand. case - CoolerMaster Silencio 550 mobo - Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H S1150 Z87 cpu - Intel i5-4570 gpu - no extra graphics card; (if needed, maybe later) ram - Kingston HX Genesis 16 GB (2 x 8) DDR3 1600 MHz CL9 ssd - Samsung 840 Pro 512 GB hdd - Seagate Desktop 2TB, 7200rpm, 64MB optical 1 - LG BH16NS40, BD Read/Write optical 2 - LG GH24NSBO, DVD Read/Write cpu cooler - Be Quiet! Shadow Rock Topflow SR1 psu - Seasonic Platinum 660W monitor - Dell UltraSharp U2412M os - Win7 Pro Dutch
In the meanwhile I did so, Rasheed187 Please don't forget that things go very slow on my end and that my eyes are (let's say) not the best.
I want to say the Samsungs are good build quality too: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/samsung_840_pro_ssd_benchmark_review_test,1.html (that looks like your drive)
As a Network Engineer that supports over 500 local PC's when we install SSD's they are always the Samsung 840 Pro's or Evo's depending on application. So far we have no had a single one fail. Ive been using one in my Sager NP8235 for almost a year now in a gaming setup and no issues yet.
@ FanJ That´s quite a nice PC you got over there, how much did you pay? Perhaps you can PM me, if you don´t want to post it. I´m also looking for a new PC, my limit is 1200 euro.
i would chime in and post this win7 optimization website http://www.thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/optimization-guides/the-windows-7-optimization-guide/2/ this is the one i always follow if i format my PC
