So with my Mullvad account, all of the websites that I visit are being tracked?

The quoted text is misleading. If your ISP is Leaseweb BV they track you, according to EU law. But if you are connected to a LEaseweb BV server via any no-logs VPN, then they cannot track anything or at least some encrypted data.

I'm using Torguard since last year and they have not my correct phone number and you can pay with Bitcoin.

Torguard is growing last months and increased the number of server. Its in my opinion now better as PrivateInternetaccess because I have more Socks5 server which I can use in combination with VPN.

I bought last year and black friday? one full package for less than 30$ per year for lifetime.

I am aware of top notch VPNs like boleh etc but they cost $. Have a friend who asks "Are there any free VPN that will hide your country etc on social media like e.g. Twitter?" As I dont use 'em myself i'm a bit clueless. suggestions apart from Tor?

Serious "cloaking" is not required just anonymity from other members. Seems twitter lists your country via your IP.

The SecurityKISS free version is very well designed for anonymity. Insorg has a free version, but I've never used it.

Currently using Softether and VPNGate with no issues. Like many free things on the internet, they require more knowledge and attention from the user than paid services but if you're willing to put some time and effort into it, Vpngate is a good free vpn solution that can give you much better bandwidth than the free version of Security Kiss. If you are just doing communication with modest bandwidth requirements, Security Kiss is good. For torrents and more bandwidth intensive applications, there are no great free vpn alternatives and if you really want bandwidth, you are going to have to pay for it.

At the moment, I've got Softether with the Vpngate plugin on a PC and several VMs and I've got an Android tablet set up with Openvpn using Vpngate servers. All working smoothly with few glitches.

Thanks John and Aalf! :D Kinda sad that we didn't see this poll go up and missed the boat for this year :(

It's a bit of a popularity contest but does wonders for business :)

you can use zenmate and browsec free vpn extensions with tor browser and a free or good regular VPN. Anyway if you want truly safe and free VPN that beats all with tons of volunteer maintained servers from all around the world then look for a certain Japanese university developed VPN that no international laws is valid fro it and is a open source.

its called VPNgate and you can download the client and use tons and tons of server from various countries (more then any other VPNs and with full speeds upto 70MB/sec providers).

here is the download page: -http://www.vpngate.net/en/download.aspx

ITS FREE and beats all other VPNs

Yes, I agree it is the best free VPN service. Softether is the open source software that was developed with it and the page you linked to is a download of the Softether client with the VPNgate plugin. You can use VPNgate servers with Openvpn too. The main page has a list of servers and Openvpn configuration files for them. You are subject to whatever local censorship the VPNgate servers are subject to whether it is at the national or ISP level. Some countries have a much freer internet than others.

I've played around with both the client and server Softether software. I would like to set up a private vpn server with Softether from my home internet connection that I can use from public wifi connections. I'm thinking of setting it up on a low power nettop box running linux.

The issue for me using logic is: WHY would someone willingly give away free bandwidth when it is so expensive for the provider? I am a business person and if it doesn't make sense I am suspect. Just my take.

Well, for businesses like SecurityKISS, it's something like a free trial, right? And for the people who host VPNs as part of VPNgate, it's "doing my part for privacy", rather like running a Tor relay. Tor relays don't earn income for operators, and the idea of implementing Bitcoin payments hasn't been well received.

Those are reasonable points I guess. At least with TOR nobody "free" ever sees my real connection (obfuscated here).

Bandwidth is relative. In countries like Japan and Korea, it is very inexpensive and high bandwidth connections are common. Giving someone in a bandwidth poor part of the world like the USA 1-3mbs of bandwidth is not such a big deal in the far east. If you look at the list of VPNGate servers, all the ones with 20+mbs are in Korea and Japan. Europe and North America Max out at around 20mbs and there are very few VPNGate servers in that part of the world that are even that fast. That being said, Private Internet Access gives you 1gbs, I believe, for $40 a year. Since I live in the bandwidth ghetto of North America, I have no need for that kind of speed and I'm happy with VPNgate.

There might also be political reasons that Korea and Japan are willing to provide free VPN servers for Chinese dissidents. Such things do get funded and those of us in other parts of the world can benefit from far away politics.

Mirmir, do you think running the softether VPNgate would be a good option for a second VPN running on a Windows 7 VM? Have PIA or Mullvad on the real computer and use the free VPNgate on the VM? I had never even heard of this. Just wondering if it is safe.

I've tried a few VPNgate servers, and I'm not very impressed. I found config errors in some. That's not surprising, I think, because people running servers may not understand what they're doing. But maybe I just picked bad ones o_O

You might as well try some of them. Others have commented positively.

What are the configuration errors? I've found the better servers are in Japan and Korea. Korean servers block bit torrents and porn. Japan is pretty much censorship free. I do feel that Vpngate requires a bit more knowledge to get the full benefit. There is a default setup for vpn servers in the Softether server package and it would be possible to post problems with the default setup on the Vpngate forum and make the developer aware of them.

I used one that was pushing "redirect-gateway def" rather than "redirect-gateway def1" ;)

I'm mostly looking for exits in particular countries of interest.

I could be wrong so please correct me on this but its actual ISP's that must comply with the EU Data retention Act law and as an VPN it does not apply. So anyone connected to netherlands is still protected via their VPN provider (provided they are good and you know what your doing)

That's what some say. But there is also a problem with the data center logging. From what I understand, the VPN provider may not log but the data center may log your IP, time, and date. So with Mirmir's approach you can fire up a vpn and then have another vpn travel right through the first one. I have recently tried using a VPN and then the TBB to participate in a message board. And it worked really well. I have also fired up a VPN and connected through Whonix. And it worked pretty well. If something is easy to do and it works well, why not do it?

Thanks for that. I think I'll skip that one for now. Right now I am using PIA and Mullvad. Do you still think that PIA is a decent choice? I've decided to get another sub for Cryptohippie when I can afford it and use it for my primary VPN. Then I'll pay cash for a second VPN and only connect to it after connecting CH. I am learning how to use VMs. I have Windows 7, Whomix, and I recently added Ubuntu, but it seems so different. I'm going to have to look at some tutorials or something. But anyway, I am getting pretty close to being able to actually try your method. I'm pretty excited. That will be quite an accomplishment for me.
