Remember how "we" all loved WP and then TWC stopped providing free data and it died? Well I don't even know why
I bothered to check but I did and Brad is getting his data from TNWS now and he's had a beta version out since August. From what I can tell there really aren't many bugs, nor does it appear he'll be charging for it. I loved that app so much that like many who requested a payed version to keep it alive, I'd even purchase it. I've been using YoWindow without the screen saver and it does keep the temp in the notification area but I'm going to give WP a whirl!
    The Link!
Update on this! You need to register any name/email address and dropbox with the setup file pops up. The only bug I have is the desklet feature doesn't render wide enough, e.g. 28° only has room for the 2 digit so I just unchecked that feature. The notification bar temperature is big enough that I can see it from across the room anyway. Other than that it is working great and has all the numerous features and settings that it always had.

I know what TWC is short for, but TNWS is a new one to me? :)

I use WeatherGopher...temperature sits in my taskbar - with mouseover for current conditions Very unobtrusive and very small resource use. No registration or ads.

Thanks! The thing I really like(d) about WP was the desklet. It was sort of like a widget that also showed the temperature on the desktop. There is even the option to have it show in all windows if you wanted. Right now it isn't rendering large enough to accommodate all of the data but the developer is aware of it. The only reason for the present registration is to provide an email for the updates.
May not matter to you but left is WG, right WP.

Really nice, I like it much better than YoWindow.

Is there any advantage of standalone weather applications over weather websites? Just curious because I have permanently open Opera browser and just one click on the bookmark or extension bar brings immediately my preferred weather website with forecast, radar of rains etc. Isn't it just habit from 80's & 90's? :)

I don't see any advantage of weather apps over weather websites.
I find government websites a lot more accurate when it comes to local weather.

in my experience, a lot of non-government websites use weather stations that often are not the closest one to me.
furthermore, weather websites from the government are always up to date because they are the provider of weather data.

Yeah, I share your view. I always considered weather applications as pointless and never had one installed.

I use our domestic weather provider's site and from foreign sites mostly http://www.accuweather.com and http://www.yr.no (it's Norwegian weather site but don't be fooled, their hourly forecast proved to be very accurate and better than of Accuweather).

I almost never install applications where a web browser will do the job.
one exception is an email application because I have multiple accounts to check.

In case you use Gmail and a Chromium-based browser I would recommend you Checker Plus for Gmail extension that manages multiple e-mail accounts.

If you go to his site you'll read some posts by him stating his wife has had some health issues so it definitely is still beta. It may never get out of beta but still works for me!

Yeah YR is good, they work closely with SMHI so I compare the forecasts sometimes even though they use the same raw data, they do some own tweaks wich can make the forecast differ a little, SMHI started using a new model not that long ago wich has a higher resolution wich makes it easier to pinpoint rainshowers for example.

But my favorite is http://www.meteoblue.com/ they recently launched 10km resolution forecasts for South America wich is the most detailed to be found on the web for that continent. http://www.meteoblue.com/en/weather/map/precipitation/south_america
They are doing a great job.

I'm still hoping that they will improve the resolution for Scandinavia too at some point. :)

Thanks SweX, I have had a quick look at meteoblue and it looks promisingly. It even located my place automatically. I will be watching this site closely and comparing the forecast with the actual situation. As regards the rain forecast the radar is the best, imo. In my country we have very precise system called "Aladin", its only downside is that it gives the forecast for 48 hours.
