DirSyncPro

Hi All

Some help needed please.

I am using DirSyncPro (A Java based program) on Win 7. Since installing it I have noticed that I am unable to delete folders (say in my Download folder) unless I delete the contents of the folder first.

I have further established that this does not apply to all folders but principally folders that are java based. I was getting a message saying you do not have permissions to delete this folder, when I know that I did have. Moreover, after "Taking Ownership" of the folder I was still unable to delete them.

Using Unlocker I discovered that there were "handles" on the files within related to Java which when unlocked enabled the folder to be deleted. To be clear these are NOT installed files/folders.

So why is this behaviour happening, why is Java locking up folders? How do I stop it without having to use Unlocker?

Hi Terry! I'm sorry I can't help with DirSyncPro but I can offer an alternative, if needed.

Bvckup2, which has been in BETA since last October, has just finished with RC2 (Beta 65). It has turned out to be an outstanding program (very small) with an even more outstanding developer, Alex Pankratov.

If you're up to it, feel free to play with it at the link above. If you register for your beta license and decide you like the product, you can purchase a half cost license ($9.95) when the public release is finally issued (shortly).

Thanks very much for your comments, very apposite. As it happens I am currently using Bvckup2) but forgot to put this information in my original post.

I do agree with you it is the best Backup program around, HOWEVER, it has one important feature that is missing and that is versioning. DirSyncPro has a form of versioning which is adequate for me. I changed from DirSyncPro to Bvckup2 because of the Java problem. Having disabled DirSyncPro I can delete any folders without problem.

So thank you for your comments and I would welcome suggestions from Wilders members on how to resolve the Java issue.

Yes I have thank you (tried FreeFileSync). I could not take to it. I found it somewhat difficult to use, not particularly user friendly. The setting up AutoSync is via a separate exe as an example. Although it gets very good reviews.

Welcome to the mess that Java seems to leave in it's wake. Beyond the fact it's arguably the biggest security risk on anyone's PC, it creates your kind of problems too. We have to run Java at work for local apps and I have nightmares of the yet to be known risks it may cause. I have banished from my PC!

My best friendly advice is to find something else that doesn't use Java. You'll be far, far better off.

 

Agree that Bvckup looks great - except no versioning.

I have started using SyncFolders recently and so far I like it because it does versioning and it provides an option to delete versions after a specified period of time. I also like the fact that the retention period is set for each pair of backup folders so if you want you can keep backup versions for one folder pair for years, but only days for another folder pair. Scanning and copying speed is ok, but I have to admit that FreeFileSync seems to have the fastest scanning speed of any software I have tried.

Unfortunately SyncFolders does not have anything specific to restore files, so if you want to recover an old version of a file you will have to manually search through its archive folders to find the one you want.

Crashplan looks interesting as well, but the free version only allows one backup set and will only do one backup per day (http://www.code42.com/crashplan/features/compare/); I'm also uncertain what the missing checkmark for "Unlimited file versions retained" means.
