Bitdefender Free protection level?

I had sent another email to Bd support asking
" Bitdefender free has
Signatures & Heuristics (Antimalware)
Behavior Blocker i.e Active Virus Control
B-HAVE
HTTP
Webshield (malicious + phishing i.e blacklists + cloud AV)
Are the above info correct? And are the above features identical as in paid i.e provides same protection as paid?"

They replied
"The features that exist in Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition are using the same "engines" as the ones in the paid products. The difference is that the paid products include several features that are not included in the free version. "

 

So it's not the "old" 2012/2013 or whatever engine, but is in fact the latest one used in 2014 products. It just lacks settings and tweaks along with Photon technology. While it would be nice to have it, it's understandable they don't include it. And frankly i don't mind it, protection is what it counts the most, we can make compromises at other things.

 

Correct..i have the free version on one PC and paid on this one, your just lacking user functions is all with free.

 

I don't like idiotic autoquarantine, otherwise it would be a great free AV.

 

I don't mind it. In fact i prefer it these days. You can restore and exclude falsely detected stuff anyway from the quarantine, so no biggie.

 

But for the outstanding detection rate I can live with a few annoyances..

 

Is Bd free ready for Windows 8.1 Update 1?

The only thing that drove me away from this product is the abysmal manual scanning speed (about as slow as molasses rolling down a hill in the middle of December)

 

Isn't manual scanning considered largely unnecessary nowadays, as any threats will be detected by realtime protection? Not to mention it auto-scans during idle time.

 

Auto-scans should be disabled by default. Only some tweaks and Bitdefender Free could be the best free AV.

 

I'm back to using this AV. The logs button not working every now and then, does not bother me. The protection seems very good and it's light on resources as well. It doesn't auto scan very much during the day so that is ok. The manual scans are slow but I believe are not needed since this program keeps your machine clean from the get go.

Correct or do a weekly manual scan when your out away from the PC, simple.

 

I'm giving it another try, I use mobile internet (3g dongle) and it seems to be one of the few AV's that doesn't have cloud chewing up my data allowance (and get stuck with the fair usage problem) that means I lose the cloud anyway!

 

Out it come, seems it is cloud based lol.

 

I don't get it why people say it's cloud based. Bitdefender doesn't say that in a single place. Not in the program and not on their webpage. And considering i've seen all its engine stuff on a disk along with definitions and the fact that it's updating hourly, it's just cloud assisted (like all AV's these days), but certainly not cloud only.

Full database is in the cloud.
Local database is some kind of optimum/smart database.

 

Just like avast!. Local base only has current malware. They moved all the malware for pre NT systems to cloud.

BD's cloud services live at ep-reverse.nimbus.bitdefender.net. Depending on which client feature set is installed/enabled, when one is scanning files and/or browsing teh induhnetz, if connectivity to that sub-domain is montiored (TCPView, CurrPorts, etc) then BD's cloud is involved. Just in case anyone wants to test/figure it out themselves.

If they don't purge caches after database updates, then they have a very badly designed engine...

 

You using this AV now RejZoR or still with Avast or something else?

Been contemplating trying this out again since people are starting to talk about it some more again. The one thing that I didn't care for was how slow scanning a folder or file was, but I guess the need to do that is somewhat diminished on a clean PC.
