Then the easiest way for you is to use external drives.
Additionally, this is actually safer than just using another partition on the same harddisk.

I think I'll use an external drive or maybe even a usb 2. Thank you everybody for your input.

I hope for the best together with you because I am really eager to get my hands on an AX64 version that works for me! Almost every week I wish for a working version. It would definitely make my life (much) easier.

Just some more explanation as to what I meant: the legal entity AX64 LLC, which is still located in the USA, has purchased KooRaRoo, which was owned by the Australian company Programming Sunrise. The product AX64 which was owned by AX64 LLC is apparently now owned by Bluebird IT Pty Ltd, an Australian company. There apparently was a swap of products across a big ocean, of which it is not clear whether they are connected or not. The link between Isso and Australia is however noteworthy, because it occurs two times. Let's hope for some good news very soon so this speculation can stop ;)

You are better off not doing so because it leaves you backups vulnerable to hard drive failure although it would make it easier when you use your laptop when not at home.

I use AX64 on my laptop and I use an external drive (plugged into a USB 2 port). This means when I am traveling I need to bring the external drive with me and each time I use the laptop I have to plug the external drive in. A minor nusance but at least I have a separate drive for my backups. On my wifes laptop I went the other route,,,,that of creating a 2nd partition and simply having AX64 store the snapshots there. I have done this for 2 reasons 1: my wife does not want the extra drive when she is away from home 2: I am OK with this because she does not use her PC for critical work. Mainly just e-mails and net surfing.

As noted above you can pick up high capacity jump (flash, thumb) drives, as much as 256 gig as noted above, which would probably be plenty for your needs, but these babies can be expensive (see the link below) ranging from $200 to over $300. A 500 gig portable (small external) drive can be found at Office Depot (for example) for under $70.

If you decide you want to go the partition route there is software that you can use to do this yourself (a good one is Paragon Partition Magic but you can do a google search to find out how and what to use) or you can go into Office Depot or Best Buy and they will do it for you.

Crossed posts (my post immediately above this one but below your last one) but a good and wise decision.

But you seem to be a bit confused. External (in this case portable) drives come in a number of flavours these days.

USB 1 - not likely you could find one even if you wanted to use it

USB 2 - prices dropping rapidly now that USB 3 is available

USB 3 - not recommended at this time for imaging pourposes even if your PC has USB capability since some systems will not see the USB 3 drive when doing a restore from outside of Windows.

If you need help picking an external drive just ask but I would say that a 500 gig Western Digital Portable Drive, available at Best Buy and Office Depot and possibly Costco, would be perfect for you

Isso's new occupation seems to be Multimedia now. His company has a new name and a new website:
    http://www.ax-comp.com

Looks like interesting stuff, just nothing which can be discussed here at Wilders.

With no apologies for speculating (after all, with no news its the only alternative)..I hope Isso hasn't found a new baby and abandoned AX64 via a complete sell out to the other partner(s)...If so, I don't hold much hope for any notable improvements.

Usually, when something looks too good to be true, it turns out to be just that. I suspect that may be whats happening here. AX64 and what it could have been may be turning out to have been too good to be true. I hope I am wrong but I/we have had some time to get used to the idea so I am unduly distressed by the idea. After all its been rattling around in the back of my/our head for what, 8 months now,,,,maybe more since the thing began to seem to be unraveling.

Darn shame for sure if this is whats to be.

Fingers crossed but those fingers don't work as well as they used to.

Why can this not be discussed on Wilders?

    Dear fellow Wilders-ers,

Sorry for disappearing guys, I'm really busy recently. First some news regarding AX64 Time Machine development - it's in progress, and I'm still on board, although not in the same position as before. It means that I don't have the same power to make the decisions, however I'm still contributing. A new release is quite close.
As for the future of this program: many conditions are needed for any business to succeed besides proper technical implementation - it's marketing, customer support, company vision, and a lot of luck. So, just as many of you, I'm too hoping that it'll be successful eventually.

I hope I'll find time and I'll be visiting Wilders more often. This is a unique place with great atmosphere.

    Isso

PS. Some other businesses were mentioned earlier in this thread. Those are indeed related to me, but are completely unrelated to Time Machine, so AXTM development has nothing to do with them.

Because multimedia components like encoders and muxers and streaming solutions have nothing to do with Wilders' mission "Security". VideoHelp and Doom9 would be the places to discuss stuff like this...

    Hey ISSO!!

The timing couldn't be any more flawless with perfection!
I been away for an extended period myself and finally just installed some super hi speed wireless to my lab after over a year or better with less than desirable service.

So do I take your statement of 4 minutes ago as positive indication AX64 Time Machine development is completely going forward?

Fantastic News & again, perfect timing if I ever seen it. This is my first post in months I think.

    Help.
I tried restoring using AX64 in Windows, and it hung at 8%.
It has now changed some settings and wiped out my System Restores.

Should I try a cold restore?

Not as optimistic as others (so far) I'm in fact saddened by this news...I don't feel happy with the new partners in this project\softwares vision from the off...Anyway, I do wish Isso personally all the best in his new ventures...I don't think I've ever seen or come across a software developer with such a humble, friendly and above all helpful personality as his.

I tried a cold restore and the boot disk doesn't work.
Where can I get a working AX64 boot disk from for Windows 8.1 Update 1?

He he I didn't think about precautions, thanks for reminding. Although if the tremor is so powerful to damage the inventory then software/hardware will be the last thing on my mind :D

Well, I am back in Windows with my computer.
    Macrium Reflect restored fine.

Just a couple of strange things that I have noticed since being restored are that my System Restore points are still gone and that I had to log into some forums again in Firefox.
But all working good again, thanks to Reflect. :)

Thanks Isso for your post. I was really glad to read it and that you posted it right when speculations increased (again)! As you may have read in my previous posts, I have tried and tried and tried to make AX64 work ever since your BitsDuJour offer but did not succeed yet. If ever I wished for a program to work it is this one! Hopefully the new version (new hot restore process) will solve that and I will finally be able to purchase. Hopefully AX64 will then have a prosperous future for you all, it is a unique program indeed. Good luck with all your ventures! (and no earth quakes...) ;)

Thanks a lot clubhouse, I appreciate it. Let's see how it goes, the new partners have more marketing expertise, so it may work out well eventually.

Hi pimjoosten, thanks for kind words. The new AXTM version will have the restore part completely reworked, so I believe it'll work on your machine.
