How to disable smilies on this new forum software?

Sometimes you need to disable smilies. I knew how to do it at the old board. But how to do it at the new board?

Example: the characters 8 and )

    1822:cool:

    I don't want a smilie there.

The following test post makes no sense anymore.

I did give a link to that test post here:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/trojanhunter-program-def-updates.359870/#post-2344328

I need to know this! Thank you.

    Hi FanJ,

A work-around, if Smilies can't be disabled, is to use spaces. From your other post:

    Hi Jan

When you preview a post and you see a smilie after a parentheses, use a bracket instead or hit the space bar to move the parentheses away from the number or letter.

Hopefully, this forum software will get an update for that nuisance but until then ----

On vBulletin we had [NOPARSE] tags which you could place around a string that had unintended alterations, like changing to smilies. That post says that [ PLAIN ] is the same thing on xF.

    A cool smiley:

Not a cool smiley because PLAIN tags are aroung it: 8)

Works! So, that's how we can prevent unintended substitutions.

Did that by entering it like this: [PLAIN] 8) [/PLAIN]

Testing a link that I want to show but not be clickable, i.e. "de-linked":

    clickable: http://www.google.com

    Not: http://www.google.com

    Works.

Did that by entering it like this: [PLAIN]http://www.google.com[/PLAIN]

I tried to de-link a link via the unlink button, but that didn't seem to work, so I just removed the http:// part and that did the trick

The PLAIN tags appear to be the way to go. I made a lot of use of the NOPARSE tags on vBulletin, so, it's good there is a tag for this here, too.

Ah, good to know how it works with this PLAIN tags. (I did not understand it from the description at XenForo.) Just when you see in the preview of your post an unintended smiley (or an unintended clickable link) you put the PLAIN and /PLAIN around it.

I typically used it (well, NOPARSE back on vBulletin) when fixing a member's post that had a number of replacements. We used to get a lot of log or program version listings that would have several of those in them. Wrapping the whole post in an opening and closing PLAIN tag would elminate them all at once.

I must test as I had trouble with de-linking a url earlier.

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/smilies-how-to-disable.362568/

Nice it works indeed! Thanks :)

Now before I knew that the quote button existed in the menu I wrote out the quote tags manually, but now I don't need to as I know where it is.

But is there a button hidden somewhere in the menu that I haven't found yet wich will place out PLAIN tags automatically by highlighting the link and then click a button?

Excellent Mike; thanks! Thanks to all others who replied too! All very much appreciated!

As Mike wrote, for program versions, definitions, logs, etc., you sometimes need to disable smilies. So I'm glad that we have the PLAIN tag here. In the Update Alert forum, for example, I always tried to disable smilies at the previous board software.

We used to have a box in which you could put a checkmark to disable smilies for a post. Always tried to use that in the Update Alert forum. Some kind of option like that or what Swex described, would be nice, but I'm glad that we know now about the PLAIN tag!
