Hi there. Here is my log. I've run Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D on a regular basis, but this hijack has just recently occured (after installing McAfee SecurityCenter ironically).

I also found JAVE.BYTEVA & it's related flies on the system which I was able to remove with Trend-Micro's scan & manually. I am running WIN XP Pro SP1a w/o Microsoft's Java VM.

I'm concerned about potential hijacks or keystroke loggers that could run & transmit info.
Thanks in advance for the help.

It definitely loks like a cws hijack, which shouldn't be possible without M$ java

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files
    C:\WINDOWS\system\systeminit.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\sstyle.css
and search for delete this file sytem32.exe note the spelling SYTEM32.exe

before deleting them please copy & zip it & send them me at the address in the spykiller site in my signature please, with a short note referring to this thread

    then

First download CWshredder from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk then Run it
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

    thanks

I got the email unfortunately it was an empty file

HJT only saves the registry entries as a backup and it was the actual .exe files we wanted to look at, but no matter, provided you are cleaned up now, that is the important thing. we will no doubt soon seee another copy of it

    That's Ok pieter

I hadn't got it before but someone else has kindly sent me one from a different forum who coincidentally had the same problem

I just wanted to see how different is was to other versions and my curiosity is satisfied now :D

Still not much the wiser though, most of it still means very little to me
