Like others mentioned above, I have built all of my pc's except my laptop.

It's not so much a matter or preference, it was just a way for me to learn more about hardware so I went for it. That was 5 years ago and it's still running fine (knock on wood). I've built dozens of computers over the years and just prefer being able to customize it the way I want to and know have to deal with all the excess junk installed by the big companies.

Sad thing is, these big companies can build and sell computers at such a small price that it makes it difficult for smaller companies like mine to be able to offer this service.

If I were going to get a server, I would probably buy a pre-built one just because I wouldn't have to worry about hardware compatability issues with a raid array or what not.

That's terrible. With velocity micro, and 5 machines, there haven't been any significant issues, and when I have needed to call the average call time is probably 5 minutes, speaking to a Richmond Va, native.

Self-built, becuase all companies ussually sell PC with some highend stuff and the rest is just a noob hadrware. They put there 3 GHz and only about 512 MB, even cheap RAM and etc. [IMG]

A good PC has to have 2 HDD, even small rather than one big, at least dual DDRAM2 and etc.

    Hi,

If you buy a Sony computer be prepared to get updates only from Sony, very proprietary.

    Take Care

If I were to tell you about the quality of their systems, and their tech support, you would not believe me, so I won't even try ...

I dont physically build them but I source and specify what I want and take it up to my local techy and he builds it for me.
I prolly should have a go myself; just time issues.

Laptops: never go past Toshiba for me have had 5 over 10 years. (New acers and Fujutsu siemens looking good, IBM still workhorses and rate highly)

If I had to buy OTS desktop/server: Alienware, IBM, HP, .

4 Computers and all self built.

I realize that I pay more that way but I get the computers that I want and no force fed software.

I am far from being a computer guru which proves that any dummy can build his/her own computer.

Peter2150 - Thanks for the tip. I will store that one away for next time. Believe it or not I bought 2 Compaq computers off the shelf and never had a mechanical problem. Now that HP bought them out it could be different. The first Compaq took a real beating because I didn't have a clue back then, but it kept on ticking. I still use the second one and it runs like new. Now I'm somewhat more computer literate, so I had the Dell built to my needs and it worked out nicely. The Dell I returned had a software issue that the boys in India couldn't figure out, so I told them to send me another box. Mechanically it was OK. My Dell is OK,(now) but I would research other brands like yours before I bought another computer. :)

Apart from Amiga started with a Dell and that was the last brand-pc. Build my first homebrew with the help from a friend choosing parts and upgraded it changing almost all the parts myself. Not very hard to do and very worthwhile.

My desktop pc was built by my nephew (he was half Chinese-half Filipino) who works in a big pc store in Manila that also supplies pc parts to different pc stores and in some parts here in the Philippines. So it was a combinations of different pc components brands. The motherboard is Gigabyte, cpu Pentium 4, etc... It was built tough and very good, no problemo and I could say that he is very good in determining and choosing the best parts and brands of different components according to the budget given to him. ;)

But in time that I buy a laptop...then maybe it would be Acer, IBM or Toshiba....depending on my choice, observations, reviews, and of course my intuition. :D :D

I have an HP Pavilion w5050.be. The reason why I buy a pc from a manufacturer is because otherwise you must know which parts could give conflicts and which products aren't good. You also have to pay for a windows version. Windows oem version is already pre-installed. I also know that there are lots of advantages when you built your pc yourself.
