Your first Anti-Virus

My first AV was Norton long time ago when i had my first 86 8Mhz MS-DOS 3.2 machine, an old Olivetti PC1 with no hard drive, only one floppy drive.

Jeez i'm getting old!

Never used Norton ever since...

 

The first one for me was F-prot in days of Dos and Windows 3.1. Those were the days...

 

I purchased my first PC in 1999. It came with McAfee bundled (free) for 1 year

 

On the first computer I used it was Norton 2002 and some version of McAfee install at the same time.

First one installed personally was AVG 8.0

My first antivirus program was McAfee Antivirus. Bought it in 1996 and it cost $39.00.

As I recall I had to go to a special site to update, not on the Internet but on the phone line. Some of you old timers would know more about it. My memory ain't that good any more.

I would appreciate knowing what it was called - maybe just a bulletin board?

 

McAfee, it was installed with my first PC, Never again.

 

If the family computer, which I would have had no say in, counts, then probably a version of Norton.

Even if that does not count, it was still probably a version of Norton based on the Post your x64 Security Setup thread. Norton 360 Version 5.0 Beta, with no intention of sticking with it.

 

I remember my first was Norton.
2nd was CA Antivirus ( i still dont know why I installed it )
3rd was AVG

After that, so many permutations

 

I believe it was in about 1995 or 1996 on a win95 box. I had McAfee on it at the time. I had just got dial-up in my house.

 

I purchased my first PC in 2003 and Norton was installed on it.

 

my first antivirus was avast home edition on Win 98 PC

Don't remember the version number though.

 

I think mine was Norton AV on win 95. Not too soon after that it was PC-cillian. Both horrific.

 

Norton used to be bad in the past, but not any more. Trend Micro is pretty disappointing.

 

Norton on I believe with 512 ram back in 2000. My system was a little faster then a turtle.what a wonderful experience it was.

 

mine was Antivir Person version 6.

 

Mine was Norton then I found NOD32 version 1 & Prevx!

Mine was PC-Cillin 2001, came with my motherboard utilities CD.

 

Innoculate-IT as I recall. Maybe not spelled correctly but you get the idea.

 

Well I first started using a PC in the 90's. It was my stepdad's. Norton was installed, but that didn't stop little me from ruining it several times by trying to download Unreal Tournament and Half-Life maps. Now I know my infections cost him hundreds of dollars from having to take it to repair shops

My first PC I got in 2007 or 8? It was a Dell Dimension E520. I installed AVG Free. Unfortunately I got some horrible infection that would freeze my IE after a few minutes. I ran a scan with AVG and it found an infection, but it froze before the scan completed. I hard-booted and went into the scan logs to remove it, but they were corrupted. Stupid me I didn't write down the name of the infection before rebooting, so now I'm haunted by this mystery infection. The virus then began freezing my PC after a short time being logged in, so I could never complete a scan to remove it. I tried safe mode, someone on the Dell forums recommended MBAM, but the freezing made it too bad. Sadly no one recommended a bootable rescue disk (this was before I knew about PC security).

Eventually I took my PC to a repair shop. They removed the HDD and scanned it, but apparently the virus had physically ruined the drive, or it had decided to fail at the same time. So I got a new HDD and Windows installation. They installed Avast! Free on it, 4.8, and I've pretty much used Avast! since then, although my companion programs have changed a lot, from WinPatrol to Online Armor, Prevx, Comodo Firewall, Outpost Firewall, but Avast! has remained. Except I will probably remove Avast! once BitDefender TrafficLight has HTTPS

Very long story short, it's actually a good thing my PC was ruined by malware, otherwise I wouldn't have become interested in computer security and fixing computers.

 

Mcafee and got infected pretty quick. It was free through my ISP.

 

I believe it was Microsfts first "own" antivirus they had for a while in Windows 3.1. I cant remember the name right now. I dont remeber what I had in windows 95 and ME but I think it was Mcafee. After that I used Nod32 for years until I dropped antivirus completely when I learned the Software Restriction Policy stuff and limited account.

If I recall correctly, my first AV was Mcafee, before any real time protection, it was on demand scanning, and I think I ran it on Win95 although I think it was originally for Win 3.1. Also F-prot for DOS. A short time later, Norton version 5 I think when Peter Norton was behind its development.

Currently Norton 360 on Win7 Pro.
