Does it work if you place the image in the window's, system32, web, wallpaper directory?

No the only pictures it will see in the wallpaer directory are bitmaps.

As I recall this used to be solved in older versions of Windows by enabling Active Desktop but XP doesn't appear to have an Active Desktop option.

Thanx Steve will work my way thru those links.

XP itself doesn't seem to have a problem with jpegs, they just will not display as wallpaper

*Just commenting .... Correct tt. I've also read the active desktop bit but couldn't tell you offhand which version's of window's it applied to. Not xp I would agree. Nope! Don't see anything in that last thread that wasn't already covered.
*Me? ... Jump the gun? :D;)

Gotta go but, should nothing previous have worked .... open display properties - runbox: desk.cpl, then desktop, click customize desktop, then click the web tab and deselect any of the web pages. Failing that try this tip by Smumdax posted on computing.net - "Solved it in removing this registry entry in:

HCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\ .... some string named Wallpaper, pointing to some desktop.html file. To see it in action, just change the name of the string and go back to your display properties .... wham! All is back to normal again!"

Note: I'm not on XP atm to have checked this reg location so, caution.

If no joy, this will surely solve that dilema. Check it out. Pick any jpg,bmp etc. and make it your wallpaper, and so much more. Nice program that has an excellent long track record too.

Thanx Easter, Steve pointed me in the right direction, all sorted now, must have changed the value when I downloaded and installed a new XP theme, as it was ok b4, and I prolly approved the change cause the theme was legit.
IRFANVIEW looks like it might be useful anyways, was looking for a replacement for very dated. ACDSee, cheers for that.

Nice one on the XP reghacks, may come in handy.
As I said to Easter, not 100% sure how that change came about as I've always had Jpegs as wallpaper, seems like it was that theme change, but alls well that ends well.

Glad it's all sorted and back to like you expect it to be again. I'm the same way and sometimes Windows gets fickle and either one thing or another goes AWOL for whatever reason. Since i'm a huge Windows customizations buff theres nothing more disconcerting for me then if a single mod fails to load or something. The last thing i expect to see is windows default appearances anyplace on my XP Pro units, right down to the digital clock i fancy, DIGITAL TIMEPIECE
