if viewed with Services.msc, it is shown to be set for autostarting, yet it is not listed as started

If start service is clicked, I get this message you see pictured.

Computer is actually running fine. I only noticed this because I noticed that my prefetches were all 2 1/2 months old. The prefetcher depends on the task scheduler, hence the problem.

Here are the related error messages in the system log:

Error 10005 (below) is precedes Error 7023 (further below)
DCOM got error "%1058" attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments ""
in order to run the server:
    {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}

    Error 7023
The Task Scheduler service terminated with the following error:
    The parameter is incorrect.

What parameter are they talking about? Windows is starting the service and services lists no depended on components!

(You have to admit, I come up with some pretty good errors!)

First question is, any idea when this problem started. What has changed in your PC? DId you install/uninstall any programs...Did you install new Updates?

DId you delete the files in the Prefetch folder? hope you didn't!

Try to stop ----> the Task Sched Service and then Start it Again.....Try if that works!

  3. You've got pwned :D
I had the same error before you, and "Global Force" had posted a solution in this subforum only :p

Get your XP SP1/SP2 CD into the tray
    Start > Run > cmd
    Code:
    C:\>sfc /scannow
type that into the DOS prompt you opened up... wait and watch :)

Search the subforum for that thread :p should be on page 2

The problem goes back further than my event logs, My guess is that the latest date that my prefetcher was updated, Sept.25 is the last time the task scheduler worked. I did not notice because I do not use it for anything except the prefecher which, of course runs (or not) in the background. Surprisingly it does not seem to be much of a performance hit, as you might think. I'm sure the boot is a little slower, but its still not bad.

I did not try disabling and re-enabling the task scheduler, it's sure worth a try!

    I'll be back!

I deleted some of them, the obsolete ones. The folderer itself, and Layout.ini are still intact, but it doesn't really make any difference since the files will not be used if the task scheduler is not working.

I will take a look, was this pretty recent?

There is something else I tried and failed, I may as well post it since I'm here. I tried to:

Oh, the idea was that I could instigate the processing of the prefetch and layout.ini files without having to wait the sort of vague amount of time that windows will take to start working with a new folder.

I am going backwards, i realize because that was done before my focus was drawn the task scheduler not working, still there is a relationship.

I forgot what idletasks are exactly, but they are the ones that windows does, supposedly when the computer is "idle".

there is a lot of vague and conflicting information out there, I believe that microsoft claims that updating the prefetch files is not idle dependent, but that parsing the layout.ini is. However, certain conditions still have to be met. I wanted to see if...Hey, wait a minute! If i do not have any scheduled tasks would that...nevermind.

the problem with these little trouble shooting sessions is that I always find things that I question, but I really don't get answers as quick as i do more questions.

    This is from Windows washer.

    Washing: Windows Application Debug Log
    In use: K:\WINDOWS\debug\PASSWD.LOG
    Finished: Windows Application Debug Log

It's completely unrelated, but on the other hand...why are passwords being debugged? what does THAT mean?

Hey just thought of another clue: I read that CCleaner does something stupid in the form of removing outdated *.pf files. Yes, I was doing the same thing, but that was because nothing was getting updated, and I had the limit (128 *.pf files) number of files so I thought I would, you know, prod old XP into action. I mean, geeze, 2 1/2 months xp? The coffee break is over!

Pretty funny comic. I never heard the term before. It doesn't seem to be commonly used among chess players.

    Hi -HandsOff!,

When I right-click properties of Task Scheduler from Services window, the Task Scheduler depends on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) running. Is your RPC running?

    -- Tom

  13. Highly unlikely that anyone can have a normal boot without the RPC, which is, I gather, a central nodal agency in XP.

no harm in checking, though, I doubt that that would b e the problem.

RPC is fine, DCOM is the main complaint from the event viewer, and the error #87 Keeps popping up when it try to manually start the task scheduler

the event viewer shows the following: at last boot these were the errors starting with the latest and workig backward.

    Error 7023
The Task Scheduler service terminated with the following error:
    The parameter is incorrect.

    info 7036
The Task Scheduler service entered the stopped state.

    info 7035
The Task Scheduler service was successfully sent a start control.

    Error 10005
DCOM got error "%1058" attempting to start the service ImapiService with arguments "-Service"
in order to run the server:
    {520CCA63-51A5-11D3-9144-00104BA11C5E}

That is the situation. If nothing jumps out at anyone, I'll just live without the service...after checking one more thing...

    Error 10005
    info 6005
    info 6009
    info 6006

and these errors and info pretty much make up most of my events for the last couple months.

    Hand's,

    We'll continue here, OK. ;)
When discussing how M$ chose to implement security in programming XP, consider this passage by Helen Keller ....

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.
Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all."

Keeping this in mind .... I can usually find answer's, not explain them.

    ************************

Returning to the matter at hand, two favor's please to simplify thing's and prevent any sort of wild goose chase. There's a myriad of reason's TS won't start. What value do you have listed for EnableDCOM under the following registry key ....

    hklm\software\microsoft\ole

.... and let me have a look at your service configuration.:D
To accomplish this in case your unfamiliar, load a command prompt with ....

    sc query state= all >x:\mysc.txt

.... where *x* represent's one of your easily accessible drive's, mysc.txt will be what to look for.
Forward the file as an attachment.

Here's a pretty standard fix you should try if you haven't already:

    1) Shut the Task Scheduler service down, i.e., change it to "Disabled"

    2) Delete the file C:\Windows\SchedLgU.txt

    3) Reset Task Scheduler service to Automatic.

    See if that helps.

Sorry about that Board! I did not know about the "code trick" nor did I realize the log would be that long. I am used to looking in services.msc where the services fit in less than two screens. I feel like I've been frozen in ice and revived 100 years later!

BTW, I like that jumpreg concept, only when I land it is in the wrong location in the registry. When I open regedit, it always opens to the last key viewed. Maybe if I collapse the tree structure it would work, I haven't tried it yet and I don't know where that option is set.

I have never heard of this before. It sounds like a rare exotic fix to me. I will try it and post the results.

    Crofttk,

I did what you suggested, but the Task Scheduler remains unstartable. A new schedLgu.txt is generated with the following:

    "Task Scheduler Service"
    Started at 12/28/2005 12:35:05 PM
    "Task Scheduler Service" 12/28/2005 12:35:05 PM ** Error **
A failure occurred during service initialization.
    The specific error is:
    0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect.
    "Task Scheduler Service"
    Exited at 12/28/2005 12:35:05 PM

    Thanks Anyways,

    Hand's,

The board forgive's you! It applies mostly to graphic's loading anyway, not text, so no worrie's *encino* man. :D sc's just handy for me alway's having at least one prompt open, and the easiest way to get the info out of you. regjump is simple enough if you've saved it somewhere on the path (like system32) and run it from a commandline. I usually exit the registry after going where I want then re-load the prompt in case there's somewhere else to go. One aspect to become familiar when working with it is that unless a location actually exist's, or the regkey syntax is absolutely correct (extra space/mis-spelling), you'll hear a *bonking* type sound stating the target was missed (check status/address bar location). Nonetheless, a convenient and useful utility.

Now about the service. While waiting for your return to try crofttk's suggestion, I've been busy viewing permission issue's surrounding service start's in general, and am confident we can sort this out. I'll post again sometime around the weekend with those idea's and instruction's.

BTW, crofttk's suggestion is similar to what's required to restart Window's Management, though the folder's involved are obviously different.

Hmm.. I never thought of it as rare and exotic and thought it was a pretty elementary fix attempt for task scheduler. Granted, I don't know the cause and effect relationship here but it has straightened out Task Scheduler in XP for me before.

I honestly have trouble explaining why fixing an application's log file would allow it to resume normal operation. However, I thought I had seen this solution at Kelly's Korner or some other help site -- this was back in the early days of XP (2-3 years ago ?). I checked at Kelly's today and a quick search turned up SchedLgu.txt but not in regards to a fix for Task Scheduler.

Sorry that didn't work for you. It was more or less a swipe at it by me based on personal experience.

I just noticed something that looks sort of weird. My reply to Global Force and Crofttk appears...before the comments I responded to. Possibly why I havent gotten any further comments.

Anyways thanks for the help, The solution has to do with a setting that needed to be changed in WWDC in the DCOM setting. I posted more details in Usual Suspects thread after noticing he has the same problem with Task Scheduler. Interested persons can find that thread

Yep! With a little thought and self-sleuthing discipline we find answer's to problem's where none previously existed.

    Hat's off Hand's!

Do realize with your resolve you remove what had turned into an interesting (for me) series of discovery exercises. About your request .... "When I open regedit, it always opens to the last key viewed. Maybe if I collapse the tree structure it would work, I haven't tried it yet and I don't know where that option is set" find the answer under Registry - Last State.

PS - If you go for the permission's edit, just the *deny* on your user/Admin. is sufficient.
