I'm new to this forum, and following an older thread, I've bumped into a problem that I have found the solution for, and decided to share.

Basically, the problem is that after cloning windows xp to a new drive, it freezes at the welcome screen, and doesn't show you the user selection.

    The previous solution was this:

Which didn't work for me. My solution is a bit different. after using loadhive, you have two system folders in your HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry folder. Check the entries in the MountedDevices folder. (If you had deleted the entries following the previous instructions, use the backup to restore them.)

First backup the MountedDevices folder. (Right click, select export)
In the MountedDevices folder, there are two kinds of entries: "\\??\Volume"s and "\DosDevices\"s. You can delete the "\\??\Volume" entries.
Now go to your My computer and note what drive letter your windows xp is. (I'll assume for instance it's drive letter x)
Now go to the real SYSTEM folder (Not the SYSTEM_00 thing loadhive makes), find "\DosDevices\X:" Double click on it and it will let you edit the binary value. Copy all the binary values.
Now go to the loadhive system folder's mounted devices, find the drive windows xp used to be on (for instance, c:) double click on "\DosDevices\C:", paste the binary value you copied and overwrite it with the one that's there.
Save, exit regedit. Exit loadhive. Restart. WinXP should be working now.
