Hi there! First post. I've resently reinstalled Win XP pro on my machine. But after doing so I keep getting my IE6 lanching by itself with the website www.silvermagnet.com/babe. I also use Mozilla foxfire as an alternate browser. It only happens in IE though. I've run both adaware and spybot to no avail. there also was a second random web site that would launch as well, but it seems to have stoped since running those 2 programes.

Any advice would be much appreiciated.

    Thanx :)

    Re: Hijack log. Silvermagnet.com

first copy these files and zip them and send to submit@thespykiller.co.uk with a short note referring to this thread

    remhelp.exe
    wnetlogin.exe
    syslog32.exe
    wuam.exe
    wupfyny.exe
    wserv32.exe
    NAVSCAN32.exe
    wmmon32.exe
    wnetlogin.exe

They are probably all in C:\windows\system32

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] wserv32.exe

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these files They should all be in C:\WINDOWS\System32

    remhelp.exe
    wnetlogin.exe
    syslog32.exe
    wuam.exe
    wupfyny.exe
    wserv32.exe
    NAVSCAN32.exe
    wmmon32.exe
    wnetlogin.exe

then go to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it

as XP will not let you delete files less than 24 hours old as it thinks it might need them please also do this
while in the temp folder, select view and select details.
then right click a blank part and select arrange icons by, and select show in groups and modified, that will give a list of all files in date order with today at the top of the page.
select all the files/folders except the today ones and delete them all.

and select EVERYTHING in C:\windows\temp except temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete all that as well

    1) Open Control Panel
    2) Click on Internet Options
    3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
    4) You may also want to check the box "Delete all offline content"
    5) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the temporary internet files
    6) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that websites have placed on your hard drive

    then
    Reboot normally &

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R314 02.06.2004 or a higher number/later date
    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

    Re: www.silvermagnet.com

Ok I got the files you sent

    wmmon32.exe - infected by Backdoor.Agobot.gen
    NAVSCAN32.exe - infected by Backdoor.Rbot.gen

remhelp is a BT broadband help file so is OK and if you think you might want to use it then restore it from recycle bin
wnetlogin wasn't in the zip file

wupfyny.exe isn't detected as anything at the moment but I'm sending them all off for further examination

    Re: www.silvermagnet.com

all of these worms get on through security holes in windows taht have recently been fixed

    so
go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    then
Run an online antivirus check from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites
    http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
    http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

    Re: www.silvermagnet.com

Ok sorry its taking me so long to get all these done, but am doing 3 things at once :ninja: .

    I've deleted

    wmmon32.exe - infected by Backdoor.Agobot.gen
    NAVSCAN32.exe - infected by Backdoor.Rbot.gen

I'll send off the wnetlogin and as I said syslog32 can't be found.

    Re: www.silvermagnet.com

wnetlogin came as an empty zip file so it's probably a 0byte file and empty on your computer

I think we can safely assume taht any of the files I mentioned are either bad or empty so just delete them as I said first, no need to send any more

the really bad new versions of the agobot & rbot have been sent to the main antivirus vendors to play with and include in the next bunch of updates

That was a seriously compromised computer and it's quite likely that there are still more infections hidden away

1st it's vital to go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

that should close some of the security holes that allow these worms to spread.

then urgently get an antivirus and firewall lists here

    http://www.wilders.org/anti_trojans.htm
    http://www.wilders.org/firewalls.htm
    http://www.wilders.org/anti_viruses.htm
    http://www.wilders.org/free_tools.htm

one free one that many users of this forum use successfully is
    AVG from http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

run a full system scan with the antivurus and fix anything it finds then repeat the online scan at a different scanner than panda to be sure

To get rid of all the crap that Symantec has found do this please

boot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

then using windows explorer go to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it

C:\windows\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it, except temporary internet files, cookies & history folders

as XP will not let you delete files less than 24 hours old as it thinks it might need them please also do this

while in the temp folder, select view and select details.

then right click a blank part and select arrange icons by, and select show in groups and modified, that will give a list of all files in date order with today at the top of the page.

select all the files/folders except the today ones and delete them all.

    Then

Turn off system restore by following instructions here
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039
That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.

I would suggest a proper firewall, rather than the M$ one

Don't have both running, it will cause major problems.

Turn off the XP firewall and use the Kerio one

    Re: www.silvermagnet.com

Don't worry, you haven't got that hijacker. You have probably surfed to an infected site, but it hasn't infected you and is only in the temp internet files

to be totally safe though this will Kill most known forms of CWS including that one if it exists

First download CWshredder from either http://www.thespykiller.co.uk or https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=14086 then Run it
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Reboot After running cwshredder and as soon as possible follow this advice:
Now as CWS Hijacks are normally installed via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    Re: www.silvermagnet.com

When I followed the symantec instructions, there was now problems with the Registry or host files so I left them as is. It was only a html file that was infected so I deleted it. CWS said I was all clear.

AS I have to run oot the door I will have to wait to do another scan, and check for updates from Micrsoft.

Will do at my next oportunity.

If I dont post in this thread again we can assume all is well in my little world.

Thanks again you are a Legend.
