    I have some questions:
    - Is the March release of the DirectX runtime included?
    - How many (if any) updates (critical, recommended, optional, etc) do you have when visiting Windows Updates from a freshly installed system with SP3 integrated.

Service Pack 3? Not today, Thank you.

I just recently had to re-install "WINXP PRO OEM"
and then "Service Pack 2" and then all my other stuff,
(Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. Backup, Backup, Backup. LEAVE ME ALONE!;) )

That was enough fun for now. Strangely though "Secunia" says
everything is just Peachy with my system. Go figure.

    Hi lodore:

Like you I'm not going to update to sp3 for at least a month if then. Never did like debuging Bill's SW.

I will read here in Wilder's to see any real facts first.

At the moment, we should set aside the M$ FUD that we all suffer from from time to time. I seriously doubt it will make one wit of difference to anybody in the end.

At some point I will have to load it so I can get the security fixes for it and make it "compatible" with my real SW.

I have a dream of an OS bug free in H/W not S/W.

If intel did in their chips what MS does in their SW they would have gone out of business years ago.

But this is dream.... never to be seen in the real world.

    Welcome back Friend,
then again if you flip it around and microsoft did what intel does with chips we would have a operating system that works flawlessly.
nice dream but isnt gonna happern.

i have had windows xp since around 2months after sp2 came out and the only real problems aside from the faulty ram is third party software.

    peace

Back when W98 came out and I was still using W95, they came out with a service pack for W98. I read that you didn't need it unless you did networking. Then in 2001 I bought a computer with W98 in it and a CD-Rom with the service pack was included. I didn't install the service pack based on what I had read in the forums. A year or so went by and when ever I attempted to buy software, the system requirements included W98sp2 or what ever number it was. I eventually had to find that CD-Rom and install it. I would have preferred to do it when the new computer was empty. So when folks say you don't need XP sp3 should I believe them?

    twl845,
You're confusing the Second Edition of Windows 98 (98SE) with a Service Pack. Something similar happened with Windows 95 and Windows 95 OSR2 :)

Just to be clear, what I'm thinking is yes I will have to install sp3 at some point to be compatible with other SW.

Just don't rush in on day 1, WAIT, there is no hurry! Let others debug for Bill I'm done with that activity.

What do you think MS have been doing for more than the last six months?

XP SP3 is being over-hyped just a little IMO... In fact, I'm betting the average person won't see much, if any, difference between a fully up-to-date XP SP2 and XP with SP3.

I think XP SP2 skewed the meaning of what a service pack is for many of people. Service Packs traditionally don't bring any breaking changes to the table and are mostly intended to be one big consolidation of previously released updates and hotfixes. Just like with Vista SP1, anyone expecting a major overhaul is probably going to be disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, I want SP3 too, but only because installing nearly 100 updates to make a fresh XP SP2 install up-to-date can be a major pain sometimes.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Final

    Hope this isn't off topic:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Final is posted on Majorgeeks.com. Can anyone say for certain that it's the real deal? I downloaded it and viewed the file's properties - can't find a build number or other definite identification.
    File size is:

    331.805.736

    File name is:

    WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU

    Decide for yourself :).

But I think it's smart if you ask your question in the existing thread about this subject: Windows XP SP3 RELEASE DATES!.

According to the file name and size it is indeed the final version;)

BTW: at the moment heavy traffic on MajorGeeks download sites, count with considerable download delay.
