    Can anyone please help.

    Windows 98SE

My pc keeps freezing, it happens in any programme, the window freezes but the mouse still moves, I nearly always have to re-start manually, can be ten minutes after startup or three hours it is very variable.

I have NSW and AdAware, have done several on line virus checks, have done Scandisk and defrag - everything comes up stating 'no problem.'

I have had new CPU fan fitted and extra memory, all after the freezing problem started.

The pc was also taken to a pc shop for a check and they could not detect the cause.

    Hope someone can advise.

    Thanks

    Rosie

    So, hardware okay?
I'd suspect the video subsystem. Perhaps a corrupt card or driver.

    Hi Rosie,
You might also try....Start, Settings, Control panel...Dble Click Systems, click performance tab, click Graphics button.....if Hardware Accelleration is over on Full....bring it back a notch....click OK and see if that helps.....

    Regs, Cochise,

also, these are pretty easy and common , but ill post anyways

    clean temp files

    clean internet temp files

make sure u dont have any weird processes running or anything taking up a large amount of ram(with 98, u will have 2 download a process watch utility)

also, if u use Mozilla Firefox, ive had some really weird problems with that lately (im using opera now) that maybe the cause

    best regards :D

    Hi,

Thanks Cochise, I will try your advice.

MCT, thanks also, I regularly clean up all files.
I do have Mozilla Firefox but haven't used it for about three weeks. The freeze ups occur in IE and in any application, like MS Word, AdAware check etc. I also find it strange that the mouse does not freeze.

    Regards

    Rosie

    Hi,

Maybe you can try this: download Everest from this site:

    http://www.lavalys.com/

After installing you can check among a lot of other things your processor temperature. It occurs when the temp is to high the system freezes. If this is the case you need to look after the cooling system.
