Looks like Win 8 will ship with a full AV! I've been running the Windows Developer Preview for 3 days, and it's much faster & responsive than Win 7 is.

Windows Defender used to slow down my laptop (XP Pro), badly. It also asked before I could do anything. So far, it's stayed out of my way on this install. I do have both MBAM & SAS installed as precautions.

Wish that I could get this same version for XP!

Windows developer preview is running smooth here. I am testing it in my personal laptop in my institute where we connect internet using proxy with authentication. I used to have connection problem with MSE there and now also with WD. So, I updated WD using definition file of MSE. I have to say its a good move by M$ to include full AV protection but disabling WD do not disable it from Action center

Smartscreen checks files that you download with IE and has been available since IE8.

    I read:

and saw no other mention of it. I'm just pointing out that it's not a new feature. It's just a way of getting you to enable an existing feature, kind of like when they get you to enable auto updates when you install other MS software. Considering you didn't know the difference between Network Access Protection and MSE's network protection, your confusion wasn't surprising. :D

SmartScreen in Windows 8 has nothing to do with IE, read 2 posts directly beneath it.

I got my first reputation notice. A bit silly. It went like this:

    1) I double clicked the file and then clicked chrome to continue readingw hile it opened
    2) Nothing seemed to be happening so i double clicked it again
    3) I went about installation normally
    4) Afterwards I realized my mouse was being weird (can't click chrome) and I noticed green strip behind my browser
    5) I saw it asking me if I'd like to open the file despite low reputation

obviously that needs to be fixed

I see now that it's not what I thought, but it is the same system, only they've leveraged it into Explorer.

Which is exactly what he said. Reputation checks on files on the machine.
