    Roger,

Win8.1 RTM is unofficially available and yes, you can upgrade your Win8 and keep all your apps. Quite quickly too. 15 minutes. Strangely enough, after you run Disk Cleanup you will have an extra 4 GB of Free Space in the C: drive. Mainly from the C:\Windows\WinSxS folder.

  3. My honest experience and opinion with Windows 8 (8.1)

    a) I think it is a great OS for mobile phones used for business, seamless integration with both exchange and outlook (for smaller business through outlook connector). Enough Apps available, for instance to take a picture of a business card and add to outlook contacts, navigation, finding restaurants/hotels and other facilities in other cities/countries, bing translate, ect. Windows phones are also cheap (e.g. Huawei).

    b) For a desktop OS it is stuck in the middle. Going back to metro aps is going back to dos again (starting applications), I work with local documents/data, no use for cloud services yet (to expensive compared to plain desktop OS and data on or NAS). I tried the cheap Win8 Pro update, but it felt like going back in time (application/cloud driven in stead of document driven). Windows 7 ultimate will stay on my desktop until 9 arrives, then I will check out what the costs for cloud services are.

Bottem line: a one size fits all is efficient from the producer's perspective, not the user's perspective.

Good... Having to buy physical media, instead of the software itself, is one of my major issues with Windows. IMO this is a win for both Microsoft and its customers.

having to install XP on a new machine in order to upgrade to 8 is a bloody headache.
i am wondering if my upgrade version of 8 will be upgraded to a full version of 8.1
and if not will i be able to purchase an upgrade to the full version.

guess i'll find out in a week when 8.1 is officially released...

What is the best way to upgrade 8 to 8.1? If I choose to keep programs and settings how is it going to affect hardware drivers? I am not sure whether windows 8 drivers work with 8.1 if I do a clean install :doubt:

i upgraded from the Windows Store and everything went fine.

create a disk image to go back to before you upgrade/install.

Is the Windows Store the only place to upgrade to 8.1 from 8? Every time I go to the store, it says I have to refresh Windows which is a serious hassle. Everything else on the computer works fine.

windows 8.1 is available now. Will I get the iso if I install it from windows 8 store app? If not where can I get the iso officially? It is such a large download and I wish I have the iso at hand.
