I rebooted this morning, and to my surprise, all my start menu entries have gone. All that has been left in its place are: Settings, Store & Edge. From my brief Googling about the problem, it seems to be common, but I have yet to find a fix that works for me. Any suggestions? OS: Windows 10 64-bit.
The problem seems to be that the Windows 10 start menu has a total limit of 512 entries. Anything over that breaks it. I don't know how many I had. Here is one of the sources.
After restoring my start menu manually, I noticed that the "Recently Added" section of the Start Menu was blank. I managed to fix it by following the Windows PowerShell suggestion mentioned in the following article. Solution: Start Menu Not Working in Windows 10 I needed to restart Windows for it to take effect. By the way. I went straight to Windows PowerShell (Admin). I didn't go the roundabout way the article suggested.
Does Classic Shell give you the ability to configure the Windows 10 Start Menu? By the way, I use StartIsBack, which enables me to use either menu.
I've tried every Start Menu replacement I could find, because the Windows 10 Start Menu can be problamatic. Also, until Microsoft increased the amount of Start Menu items from 512 to 2,048 there would be programs missing. However, despite its faults I prefer the Windows 10 Start Menu to every alternative I've tried. I really like being able to pin programs to the Start Menu as tiles, and I have a lot of programs pinned there.
i stick with startisback as a replacement and since win7 additional TrueLaunchBar with the same structure as i used on XP. the new desktop with tiles introduced in win8 i dont see it in windows 10, not sure if win10 has same but that extra desktop with tiles seems missing in win10 and its usage instead of this stupid new start menu.
I've lost all my shortcuts again. It has gone back to the same thing as last time. Settings, Store & Microsoft Edge. I've had enough of this flaky Windows 10 start menu.
Personally i never had issues with it and it is far better than any start menu i ever used from Windows, pinned tiles help me a lot instead of navigating inside the menus everytime.
yes sure, just wait the next build for more entries. Personally if i need a program , i look first if it has portable version to reduce C: space usage and of course i get less entries in start menu. And what if you restart "explorer.exe"?
I still have issues with some programs not being shown. This can fixed by switching to an alternate Start Menu, but whenever I do that, I really miss the pinned tiles. Also, once or twice, the tiles have changed position by themselves, which is annoying when you have spent time organising them how you want.
I am starting to think that it might be related to NVIDIA GeForce and GeForce Experience update, so I might try a System Restore. NVIDIA stuffed things up with the Start Menu on the previous update.
i uninstalled GeForce Experience, useless to me, im not a gamer anymore. but i see Nvidia processes loading stuff everywhere
I'm not a gamer either, but it's an easy way to keep all my computers up to date. I used to manually download the driver and update them all, but I find a huge benefit with GeForce Experience for that reason.
It is why i am a big fan of Rollback RX ( despite the risks ) , i can load a previous clean snapshot in 15sec.
OK. I have found the problem. It's Windows 10. If you have too many shortcuts or Live Tiles, it resets. It must have been that last one I pinned. There should be some sort of warning when you get close to your limit, or even a message telling you to remove one before you can add another. But no, nothing like that. It just resets on you. So, go easy on the Windows 10 Start Menu, folks or you might suffer a reset.
