I'm wondering, if I buy a brand new hdd for my laptop that is already running Win10, so Win10 has already been activated, and boot to the ISO DVD it will install a bare-bones copy of Win10 with no extra crap that was included by the laptop manufacturer, correct? Then I can install only the programs I want without any bloat.

The machine in question hasn't been supported by the manufacturer for years and I see that Win10 has already updated a few drivers after upgrading from Win7.

Any information and / or advice will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

be careful with those links they have been reported as malware.

doesnt matter anyway the x64 drivers posted there doesnt work at all.

i have tried everything stated on that page short of these drivers and none works. on either one is a dell on is a hp both same gpu both same issue. legacy drivers do NOT work in this case at all.

    Thank you!
Any issue doing this I should be aware of? I've only ever used OEM OS's which include all the extra bloat, never a really clean OS.

When installing the clean OS you will be asked twice for a Product Key. On the first occasion choose Skip. On the second occasion choose Do this Later.

Windows will Activate without entering a Key.

Will you be doing a MBR or UEFI install?

    Thanks Brian.
Well, the machine has a BIOS, so I guess that will be MBR.

This is how I install a Win10 MBR OS. There are other ways...

A NTFS partition is created using a BIBM boot disk. I make the size 40 GB minimum. Set the partition Active in "View MBR" of BIBM Partition Work.

Boot the Win10 UFD/DVD and after a few screens choose Custom install. Select the partition you just created. It will be System in the list. Remove the boot disk immediately after the first restart as sometimes the boot disk boots again. The disk isn't needed after the first restart. Easy!

Doing it this way gives you a single partition system. There is no SRP or Recovery partition as these files reside in the OS partition.

Is there any real disadvantage of having the extra partitions? If I understand how your method works your not saving any space are you?

It's not for space saving. Using image/restore is easier with a single partition system than a triple partition system. But it's up to you.

Also, after you install into a single partition you have the opportunity of later creating three primary partitions of your own. If you start with three partitions you can only create one primary partition of your own. I prefer to avoid creating logical volumes in an extended partition as they aren't as robust as primary partitions.

Ah, I see. I will give that some thought. I'm not quite ready to start just yet, got to acquire the new drive.

    Thanks as always, Brian.

MS introduced a new Windows Update engine and it is not working as well as MS anticipated. New W10 updates have failed to either download or install properly. When an update fails it is usually resent to the recipient to try again, but this is not always happening with this new engine. No doubt the test of the new engine will be the big W10 update package that is scheduled for next week. Home Edition W10 users will be the guinea pigs - seems unfair as they are the least likely to know what do do if the anvil drops on their collective heads.

For those who relied on the GW10 icon to reserve & schedule their upgrade via Windows Update - it has not been a resounding success. A good number of users have re-downloaded several times and received the same error codes (myself included). Missing files have plagued the download. Why?, seems no-one really knows. MS MVPs and forum helpers have redirected users to the media install tool as this has proven more successful. I have had no problems with using the MS media tool to migrate my friends and family from W8 to W10 , but the WU method has proven a total disaster. MS should dump the GW10 icon/reserve totally instead of telling people to wait for the next wave. That would also placate those who are fed up with the KBs that support the GW10 initiative and direct those who want to try W10 to use the Media Install Tool. That was a rant - but I am fed up with the BS.

okay back to 100% success rate. used ntlite to add windows 8 gpu drivers for the hd4200 to a win 10 iso and it worked perfect. so now i have 4 additional iso's for those that have older ati card or integrated gpu's. this will work with ANY drivers as long as they were at least win 8 compatible. so my tally up till now is upgraded 143 systems and have another 13 sitting here in line.

@zfactor Good to hear you got it working. I may have to use the nLite somewhere along the line as I'm reguarly working with old laptops.

Have noticed this too. Right after upgrade to W10 I run WU and it turned out that a few updates weren't installed successfully. But these failed updates couldn't be reinstalled, there wasn't an option to run them again. Next day I received the cumulative update for W10 which overwrote the history of updates, since then the history is empty. It is obvious that MS is still honing WU to perfection. On the other hand it is fair to say that even if WU still doesn't work flawlessly I don't have any crashes etc.

When I did my clean install, the first update failed, then failed again, but the 3rd time it finally installed. So, don't know what that was all about, but it worked out ok in the end, and everything since then has installed, no problems...

Bugs that I have found so far.

    1. Unless the taskbar is at the top of the screen explorer windows move about ie open explorer window & move it to the centre of the screen then close it, next time you open it it will have moved down & to the right. Putting the taskbar at the top seems to stop this behaviour.
    2. Right click a folder & click properties & the properties windows always appears behind the explorer window.
    3. Set a static IP & Open DNS servers in network adaptor properties & reboot. After rebooting you get yellow warning icon on the network icon but you can still access the internet etc & only way to remove it is to remove the static IP address or disable the adaptor & re-enable it but the warning icon will be back on next reboot.
    4. Use the snipping tool & save the snipped image on the desktop & it wont appear until you refresh the desktop.

I just noticed that if I go to uninstall something via the "new" method (Settings - System - Apps & Features), that everything has the uninstall button greyed out - not just system applications, but everything, including games. I can uninstall something by going to the (now sort of hidden) Control Panel, Programs and Features, but not under the new Settings.

They're not greyed out if I log into the admin account, so I suppose this is normal behavior under a standard user account? I'm glad they kept the old interface around.

for those that don't want to use a certain App right click on it in the metro screen and choose Turn Live Tile Off... easier than using some crap 3rd party software to do it

Tried Win 10 for a couple of weeks and am back with Win 7 Pro. Love Windows 10 but couldn't get my USB ports to work. I finally got them functioning.

Two programs would not work and, naturally, they're the ones I use daily. I contacted the makers and neither had any reports of problems with 10. They worked with me, over and above what was required, but nothing fixed the issues. I've got to have those programs so, much as I hated doing it, I reverted back to Win 7.

I'll try 10 again in a few months.
