Well both of these can't be true!

This likely won't work and will have problems. After Threshold 2 (W10SP1, build 10565) releases in a few days, they can use their Win7 retail key to install/activate Win10 cleanly. This would be ideal. If they don't like W10 (give it 2 months to see, change can be annoying at first), they can do a clean Win7 install with the same key. The retail key gives them freedom to use either OS on any machine.

It will work, just not supported. There may be a driver unavailable for some of the peripherals (like a custom keyboard) or it may work flawlessly. It won't hurt to try it.

Friends don't let friends go to Best Buy, in all seriousness. You can get a far better kit far cheaper and without annoying, ignorant, immoral salesman (upsell is the name of the game there) online, even Amazon.

Yes, it'll be an OEM key burned in the BIOS with any OEM PC post-Win8. This is a problem with Win10 currently (to be fixed in 10565) when trying to use a Win7/8 key other than the BIOS key (like, if your laptop came with Home but you've installed Pro). This is supposed to be fixed by being able to use the actual Win7/8 key during Win10 installation. I'll know soon (I have a laptop in this circumstance).

Petitions are for government; they do absolutely nothing in this realm. Besides, this is what Windows Insider feedback is for.

I told my neighbor that I would be very uncomfortable doing what they wanted on a brand new W10 laptop without a good bit of advise, so thanks for your comments. I have the technical skill to do it, but because they are looking for a 'good deal' their purchase could come from anywhere and a unique set up could cause difficulties . As an example, I told them that I do not know what the big box stores do with the laptops they sell (it is my neighbor's decision as to whom they purchase from, not mine). I agree with you that they should give W10 a whirl for a few months and I suggested as much, however they know that I am using W7 as my prime OS with W10 in test, so it is a bit rich coming from me to suggest they use W10 as their prime OS.

Not really...everyone's requirements and preferences will be different and it is important to take the user's needs into consideration rather than our own.

When you say, "looking for a 'good deal'", I hear, "cheap"--not the same as frugal or value--which is always a headache and beyond not recommending the cheap route, "I don't know the proprietary stuff; talk to the OEM/retailer for support." is where I leave it. The last time I touched a Best Buy "good deal" box, the SATA connectors disintegrated and fell right off the motherboard. I don't like dealing with people who know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

Tnx, I'll pass on your experience to them. I understand they are budgeting around $2,000. Between now and Boxing Day they may find something of value.

Ah well that's not cheap! They should get precisely what they want and, yes, wait for competitive price-drops. I would look higher end (Asus, MSI, custom built rather than hp or anything at a retail store).

Whatever they get, it should have a SED SSD as primary and only an HDD if they need bulk storage on it. It should also have Win Pro for Bitlocker for zero-overhead encryption with the BitLocker-compatible SED (Samsungs have it). Always encrypt mobile devices! (Your Best Buy lackies likely won't have any idea about that stuff.)

Does anyone have any suggestions to find out what the 'Unknown Device' is in Device Manager?

I've just finished installing Win10 on a brand new SSD and can't find what this Unknown Device is.

    Thanks.

HP 3D Driveguard monitors if the laptop appears to be falling and parks the heads so they don't hit the platters on impact.

No heads or platters on SSD, so no need for HP 3D Driveguard, Krusty.

Yeah, that's what I thought too, Martin. Thanks!

I've disabled it in Device Manager now so as I don't see the yellow exclamation point anyway. ;)

    You're welcome, Krusty.
    Enjoy your new SSD.
As you know from your other laptop, there's a night and day difference when getting your OS from platter to SSD.

    Absolutely, Martin.

I can't stop kicking myself for taking so long to move to a SSD. Something I should of done years ago and if anyone wants to upgrade for their machine's performance a SSD would be the first thing to consider.

All you need to know about Windows telemetry, upgrades

Here's an important tutorial explaining how to change Windows telemetry tracking, operating system upgrades and updates on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to maximize privacy and avoid Windows 10, including opt-in/out of Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP), patches to disable upgrades with group policy and registry, Windows Updates settings, additional reading, future outcome, and more. This should be extremely useful. Take a look.

Sounds (heh) like a Mozilla issue. Use a browser with better HTML5 support: https://html5test.com/results/desktop.html
If another browser sounds fine, then Mozilla is your problem.

Look in control panel to ensure you have sounds defined.

I don't think that Windows 10 has a start up or shut down sound option as it doesn't list it in control panel - sound - sounds. Mine make no sound when starting up etc.

Well there is a startup sound just put a check-mark in this box. But can't find a shut down sound box.

Lol I never noticed that when I checked before posting, that used to it being in the list instead. I always disable most of the sounds I don't need & start up & shut down were always the first to go.

I hope this easy way is the best....?I had installed windows 10 over 7 which really slowed my computer....I went on Computer Forum and some guy told me to do a Windows reset which would wip[e my hard drive and give me a windows 10 clean install instead of using a u8sb drive and new serial number and my computer is now running like a top.....It seems this easy way is the way to go.......I did get get a message though saying it would wipe out my win 7 back up...is this easy way the best way.....?....Of coarse i had to re download all my programs
    fine with me though..

@ttomm1946 When you do the upgrade to Windows 10, you can choose to keep nothing, which saves you having to upgrade and keep all your programs and then do a reset. Also, the new build of Windows 10 which is being released soon, allows you to do a clean install of Windows 10 using your Windows 7/8 product key.

Personally, I haven't had any performance issues on any of the Windows 7 and 8 computers I've upgraded to Windows 10, and haven't had to do a reset or clean install.
