Well, I had a good experience upgrading from 10130 to 10159, but this upgrade from 10159 to 10162 is terrible, slow as a snail. After one hour, the install process had only gotten to 3% and it was obvious that something was not right.. So I aborted it. I've seen others mention slow upgrades from time to time in prior builds also.

Anyway, taking into account the hit and miss nature of all this beta stuff, I decided to just stick with Win 7 for now. Later down the line, after a few months of upgrades and user feedback, things might be better. For now, just too many issues to deal with. Although I must say, Win 10 does look n feel very nice.. So hopefully they'll iron out and fix the under-the-hood bugs and issues. I just don't have the patience for all the problems that arise in the previews... Oh well. ;)

10162 did take a couple hours to upgrade to. I am noticing there are now right click options on the start menu items that I did not see before. At least not on the 10158. I did not get to spend much time with the 10159.

Yeah, I barely got 10159 installed and then here came 10162. 10159 upgrade took about 1 hour to install on my 10130 as an upgrade. I think something was amiss with my setup or with 10162, I don't know why it would take twice as long. Anyway, I'll wait for final, then watch and check what everyone says when they upgrade before making the final leap. I might even stay with 7 for close to a year, just to give 10 plenty of time to get cleaned up and polished.

Hmm. I upgraded from 10158 to 10159 yesterday. No problems here. It was Activated, nothing required to do so.

No third party anti-virus installed, just Windows Defender on my test platform. Once Windows 10 is released I'll go with Outpost Security Suite.

    Thanks for that link WildByDesign.

I read through it and noted these points :-

    • Remember, trying out an early build like this can be risky. That's why we recommend that you don't install the preview on your primary home or business PC. Unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything.
    • If you want to stop using Windows 10 Insider Preview and return to your previous version of Windows, you'll need to reinstall your previous version from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC—typically a DVD
    • After you install Windows 10 Insider Preview, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.
I see that there is a Product Key given on the website .

Has anybody here tried running any of these ISOs in a virtual machine ?

None of these points should be a problem. You can just take an image of the drive, including the recovery partition, and restore it later if you need to.

    That's what I did when I gave Windows 10 a test run.

If I install the W10 Preview, can I upgrade to the final release or should I just format and do a install again?

I have run a few builds in a VM using VMware; currently using 10159 and will probably install 10162 using the ISO now that Microsoft has made links available.

Since the beginning of this particular Windows Insider program Microsoft has stated that users would literally be able to upgrade from one Insider build to another, all the way up through to RTM. Although some earlier Insider builds had some rough edges around upgrading, the upgrade process currently is quite smooth.

But for the short answer, yes, absolutely you can install a preview now and upgrade when RTM comes along. I am confident enough about it right now to suggest that. As always, it is good to keep regular backups and/or disk imaging.

I personally haven't been using these builds in VM's, although I have seen many reports of users doing that with good success in general. I would probably recommend to follow the Windows 10 threads over at MDL forums for the ins and outs of which virtual machine software is working best for these builds and also which settings are working and which are not. But for the most part I've seen good success with virtual machines.

Yeah, I have no idea what happened, but I know it happened to tons of others too. Weird!

It still isn't clear to me even now whether the final will actually be activated in this situation.. Some have said yes, it's free to insiders, and some have claimed no, you won't be activated. I wish they'd just come out and clearly state what's the case in each situation.

Strange, last night here it showed 10162 and I downloaded 10162. But now it shows 10130.

The blog post stated that 10162 would not make it to Slow ring until early next week as long as it did well enough for Fast ring users. So I don't believe that it has technically made it to Slow ring yet because it is usually accompanied by another blog post. But, in contrast to that, it is unusual that they have released the ISO's for 10162 already because that usually happens at the same time as it hits Slow ring. Microsoft seems to be the king of ambiguity as they seem to cause more confusion.

I downloaded the en-US ISO of 10162 late last night from that same link. I checked again right now and it still shows 10162 for all languages there. So I'm not entirely sure why it's showing differently for some users.

    Try this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-iso-update-1504

There is still quite a bit of confusion regarding this as well. However, as long as you are using an OEM system it should be able to confirm the product key from within the BIOS along with hardware hash. But it's hard to say. I think that it is all likely very simple and easy to understand, yet the way that Microsoft goes about explaining things seems to cause more questions and more confusion across the Internet. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Thanks for all your explanations WildByDesign... Yeah, that link now shows 10162 when I go there. Weird alright. I think I might download the ISO now and install clean. I restored an image of 10159 (before I activated it), and I'm trying the upgrade to 10162 again, but it's very slow, or else it's doing something else. One thing I've found, with Win 8 and higher is that their progress indicators in Win Updates often don't show anything at all for a long time, then suddenly the entire download is done! So that's probably what's going on here, it shows 0% now for 40 minutes, but I see disk I/O going on, so I know *something* is happening..

Yeah, I wish MS could be more clear, but they might not know what they're going to do yet themselves, so who knows. When I called MS support to activate 159 yesterday, I asked the girl what would happen when the final got out to testers and she seemed to be saying it would be free, regardless. So who knows, right?

I think I will download the ISO now.. if this upgrade doesn't work, I can always do a clean install. That would probably take care of the activation issue too...

    Thanks again...

Anyone can use Insider builds indefinitely for free; that's been announced. This is entirely separate from the free upgrade.

To get the free upgrade, we have to install/activate an eligible product (Win7/8.x), get the Win10 upgrade as an update (which will be an in-place upgrade) and you'll have Win10 for free for that device (hardware changes that trigger activation will kill your free Win10). Additionally, we can burn an ISO from the upgrade and do a clean install and it will already be activated (because it is keyed to your hardware; using the ISO on different hardware will ask for a key, just like the OEM-branded installation discs). This has been announced.

Currently, I'm running Win10 on my desktop, laptop, and a VM (Win10 Pro Hyper-V). After release, I will reinstall Win7 on the desktop, OEM Win8 on the laptop, perform upgrades, burn ISOs, and run Insider version on the VM.

    @Kerodo

You're welcome, I'm always happy to help whenever possible.

Since you think that there might be some download progress (even though it's showing 0%) you can check and be certain by running the following command in an Admin Powershell:
    Code:
    Get-BitsTransfer -AllUsers | select *
That would show the current progress, if any. Alternatively, you can look within the folders here C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download for any sign of the .esd file.

However, for whatever reason, mine stayed on 0% for over 24 hours and I tried a dozen times or so. I ended up downloading the ISO but still decided to use that to perform the upgrade just to test out the process and it went very well.

Well, that's interesting that yours stayed at 0% for a whole day first.. I decided to download the ISO for 10162 from your link while I waited, then I just aborted the "upgrade" that wasn't going anywhere, and cleared the disk off and installed 10162 clean. That's the only way to go IMO, based on what I've seen lately. Everything went perfectly well, I set things up, installed a few apps, and so on, and I'm all set now. I'm leaving it in slow ring for now. The fast ring is just too chaotic for me, lately anyhow. Slow ring is fine. This build looks nice and I can see they're getting closer to final. This clean install activated without any issues, as I thought it would.

One weird thing, when I went into settings it said I wasn't set up to receive insider builds. So I clicked the Fix icon a few times, and it fixed things up, now it's set to slow ring and receive updates. But there was an option there to stop builds and then some directions on a link about what you had to do etc. Interesting...

Thanks for the help. I'm pretty convinced now that the only way to go is clean install.

PS - I just noticed that the feedback app is now gone completely! I'm really wondering if this 10162 might not actually be the final.

I believe that they removed Windows Feedback and Insider Hub because it's getting closer to RTM now and a lot of the telemetry and debug code has been removed as well. That also explains why it's improved in performance now as well.

If you want to put those apps back on, go to Settings modern app - System - Apps & features - Manage optional features - +Add a feature - and choose Insider Hub. I'm not certain if Windows Feedback app is there or not because it was already on my 10162 install since I had upgraded from the previous.

Anyway, I am glad that everything has smoothed out for you and that after clean installing 10162 your activation issues are a thing of the past. I think that staying on Slow is perfectly fine for you because 10162 will still receive hotfixes/patches if necessary. Then when RTM comes, you can choose to upgrade or do another clean install. Windows Insiders are expected to be within the first wave to receive RTM when the day comes. Although RTM will likely leak prior to official release.
