Does anyone still have their Windows.old folder? Wasn't this supposed to be absorbed 30 days or less after Anniversary update? When you try to delete it the regular way, System won't let you. Since Windows is on a tiny (110 gb) C drive, it would be nice.....
Windows Disk Clean-up in Admin mode should remove the old folder, I did have one friends system that had problems removing it so I booted to Safe Mode and then deleted the folder manually.
Well, this was on 1607, and after researching, it does appear to be related to the updates, however, I had already done the September updates earlier that day. So it was after a shutdown and a cold boot that it went into some weird update related situation that went on too long (even though the updates had already been done). I think it's a bug of some kind as I have seen it do this once before on a prior clean install. I'll check it out again when I get a chance though...
System was still clinging to W.old, even in safe mode; however, Disk Cleanup (administrator) purged about 6x more than what the W.old folder was worth. Nice. Thank you for the tips.
On 8/31 I forced the AU on a new system I purchased on 8/30 and now the windows.old folder is gone. I know it was there on 9/10 as I checked the Windows Defender folder in both the new and old to verify that MSASCuiL.exe is new with AU. The old folder may have been removed during yesterday's Skratch Tuesday. Or a scheduled task could have run. Or something. However, there still seem to be two remnant folders in the root of C: Windows10Upgrade $GetCurrent Together worth 19MB in 1088 files. BTW, my favorite method to whack seriously recalcitrant files and folders is to boot into a live Linux distro and do the deeds there.
10 days... http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/microsoft-slashes-windows-10-rollback-period-with-anniversary-update-1326051
I have an issue with the Start Menu. Not all new programs I install are shown. The only way to get all the installed programs to show in the Start Menu, is to delete the %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder after making a copy of it, and then copying the contents back. I ran Tweaking.com's Windows Repair which did not help. Also, I did an In-Place Upgrade last night, but it also did not fix the issue. When I run get-startapps | measure from PowerShell, it shows that the number of Start Menu items is well under the maximum of 2,048 items that can be displayng in the Start Menu in Windows 10 AU.
I uninstalled 3D Builder. Following the instructions below: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/remove-3d-print-with-3d-builder-context-menu-item It did not work.
...................Some users have reported that even after uninstalling 3D Builder, the context menu items continues to remain................... Whenever you right click or press and hold on .bmp, .jpg, and .png files, you will find the option being displayed
You can try to uninstall 3D Builder with IObit Uninstaller instead of CCleaner. CCleaner doesn't clean remnant files/registry entries. I have very good results with IObit Uninstaller.
You can't fault CCleaner. It uses the original package uninstaller via Tools \ Uninstall. The 3D Builder package leaves itself on purpose. When you visit the Explorer context menu, you'd see ' 3D Print with 3D Builder '. If you clicked, it'll just re-install this package on your computer again, and you back with 3D Builder installed. Ensure 3D Builder app been uninstalled again. Then make reg file using the following information I'm sharing, then import it. ----- Copy below this, DO NOT COPY THIS HERE LINE ----- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.wrl\Shell\3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.stl\Shell\3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.png\Shell\T3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.ply\Shell\3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.obj\Shell\3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.jpg\Shell\T3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.dxf\Shell\3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.dae\Shell\3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.bmp\Shell\T3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.3mf\Shell\3D Print] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.3ds\Shell\3D Print] ---- DO NOT COPY THIS HERE LINE ----
You're right, at least on this machine. I've never noticed that before so I'll have to check my other machines next time I boot them.
I don't know if this has been posted elsewhere or not but sorry if it has. What's new in Windows 10 security
That's what I use too. I don't even have CCleaner on any of my computers. However, IObit's scan for leftovers does not find the conext menu items for 3D Builder. You need to follow Phant0m's instructions to remove them.
hi may i ask only a question ? do I need to download the iso and upgrade offline or online ? does microsoft release the anniversary update via internal update ? thanks
You should be offered it as update from Windows Update. If not, you can install it from the ISO. There's no need to be offline when you upgrade.
mantra, I used this ISO to upgrade about ten of our home computers... https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO/ We only needed one download. Not ten.
For Windows default Apps I had problems on some machines uninstalling from the start menu, using power shell, and using W10Privacy... In fact W10Privacy made such a mess I wound up re-installed the default Apps & then uninstalling with CCleaner - which seems to work consistently for me so far
hi i tried to download the iso , but w10 starts to download via internal update how can i clean up /get rid of the all the updated /and downloaded files after the anniversary upgrade (included created folders) ? thanks
