David, given the Windows 8.1 System Requirements, and that Sony Vaio Laptop Specs, it would barely run.

IMO, the biggest issue is the Integrated Intel GMA X3100 graphics adapter, although as stated, Winodws 8 ships with an X3100 driver. The more RAM you have, the higher "shared" memory for graphics. The laptop's maximum RAM is 4 GB, and if another 2 GBs were added, that OS would run fine.

David, you're welcome! Make sure to backup all your files prior to the OS upgrade. Take care.

David, for what it's worth. I have an old Asus netbook with an Atom processor and 2 GB RAM. It came with WinXP and I installed Win8 as a multi-boot. Win8 runs as well, if not better, than WinXP.

I have Windows 7 x64 and Windows 8.1 x64 virtual machines that run decently with only 1 GB of RAM.
