Why is it that every time MS releases new software, like the Office beta, IE7 etc., one must have Windows XP to run or use it? I'm still old school running Windows 2000 and cannot afford any upgrade to Windows XP.

Two reasons, #1 to costly to support older versions of windows #2 they want you to buy the newer version. The truth is probably somewhere in between :doubt:

    There is a 3rd reason.
Each version of Windows/Office adds programming capabilities that make it easier, or more secure, to do certain things.

Even when it is possible to support certain functionality on more than one OS, it is often not cost effective.

For example, I no longer worry about whether any of my programs work prior to Windows 2000, or with Office 97.
