I fell in love with linux just a couple of months ago. I was a hardcore Windows user ever since Windows 95. I have seemed to settle on Unity as my favorite desktop. It fits my needs the most as it maximizes my vertical pixels and the side bar is enough to provide ample space for most of my software.
Which desktop environment do you use and why?

We need an "Other" option as I don't use a DE at all instead preferring a standalone window manager.

Sometimes I use Puppy Linux, no installation required, but it is no replacement for Windows. Sorry I misunderstood, it is desktop environment, therefore my post is irrelevant.

XFCE because it's light and stable and works great on my older hardware.

    I use Unity.
I think it offers an efficient and usuable experience out of the box.

With tweaking XFCE is also sufficient for my needs.

my favorite is still gnome 2.32 desktop environment or 2.28 of redhat 6 clones but after that i like cinnamon very much :)

    i give unity/xfce same score

then kde because i am not kde fan

but last which i dislike the most is gnome 3.x.x

it make me feel like changing a hot wife stable happy relationship for some weirdo chic ;)

Found xfce and never gone back.

Also, long time user of Mint, after some time with Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, and Puppy.

    -cheers,

KDE – Unity – and now that I can use Cinnamon – that too!
(In no particular order of preference)

Just switched from Unity to MATE. I have to say I miss that extra real estate. I wish there was a nice way to force program options into the tray like Unity does it.
