I'm setting up a new laptop to take to college next year. For obvious reasons, I'm going to run anti-virus on it. I have several options.

    1. My school offers Symantec Antivirus Corporate 10 for free.
    2. AVG
    3. Avast
    4. Anti-vir
    5. Old copy of Norton 2003
    6. Other free option

Because I have these free options, I would rather not spend money on another product. Which would be the best solution for me? I'm looking for light on resources as biggest priority, but obviously full-featured and secure are important too.

If those are your only options, II would chose avast. But you said resources are a priority for you, and avast uses quite a bit. If I were you I would purchase NOD32, which is only $19.50 via student discount, from FireCat (here at wilders: http://www.nod32-av.com/) With it you'll be getting great protection and little resource consumption.

If I really cared for my computer I would choose Symantec Antivirus Corporate 10 without a doubt. None of the other options you mentioned will give you near the protection. The new versions of symantec antivirus actually run very light on most all computers.

I fully agree. Especially when you can get it free.

I hope you do really well with your education.

    Best Regards,
    Mike

Are you saying all avast!, Anti-vir and AVG users don't care about their PC's :doubt:

    My choices would be

    1. Symantec Antivirus Corporate 10

    2. avast!

What I said was, with the options you mentioned, symantec by far is the better protection. I never said they did not like their Pc's. But they could have better protection.

As Symantec is free to you, why not give that a try first and see if it's light enough on system resources for you. If it's not, you can then always look elsewhere :)
