    Oh you misunderstood.

    I wasn't saying that your 100% meant 100% protection.

I mean that no software offers perfect protection and therefor there will always be "a bit less protection" than is ideal.

There is always a point where you have to say "I can't offer perfect protection, here's the best I can." I'm sure you realize your 32bit product doesn't offer perfect protection but you still produce it.

If he doesn't go for a 64-bit version, he could at least start developing a 128-bit version so it's ready for fight when the 128-bit OS's are released. When ever that will be..... :p Just joking ;)

Nah I seriously think it's great that he actually do consider a 64-bit version.... better late than never or how was it :thumb:

Not only do you love classic HIPS but you just bought licenses, would be a waste not to use them :D

Honestly, the only reason I haven't moved to 64bit is because I cannot use Defensewall. This is a keeper, so I guess I have to wait.

It gives me a piece of mind my other security programs don't. Oops, well one other is Returnil.

Well, I'm sure this was an inevitable question, so I'll be the first to pop: Considering how long it took for DW to even consider giving 64 bit protection, and seeing as it isn't out still, what do you think will happen now that Win 8 is around the corner? As it was pointed out in another thread, there will be kernel changes, and I'd be willing to bet a lot on that being security changes as well. So, not only does DW still need to work around Patch Guard in Win 7, now, if it is to continue on, it'll need to worry about Win 8. Who knows, maybe even the 32 bit version has been beefed up enough as to cause DW some problems.

And that's likely to continue as MS develop the next version after 8. The other problem may be if we get 128 bit systems. I know some of this is a way off, but worth thinking about.

A while back, there was talk of Win 8 being 64 bit and 128 bit only. Obviously that didn't pan out, but Win 9 is a contender. 128 bit is certainly doable now, but outside of hardware, I don't think the industry is ready. 128 will come soon enough, but for now, I'm still curious as to how DW will deal with Win 8, along with the other vendors who don't yet support 64 bit.

We will not be getting 128bit systems for quite a while. Don't worry about it.

32bit still won't have patchguard, which is only possible in 64bit from what I understand, so I can't imagine there will be too much to work around.

my hope is that the OS is secure enough one day that we don't need to rely on third parties for protection.

Security should really be built-in the OS.

Except for the fact that a good portion of systems sold in stores, again, are 64 bit versions. I don't see that trend going away with Win 8, honestly. It's a great marketing tool. I've been in enough Best Buys and been around enough other shops to watch sellers work, and to watch consumers get the hook embedded firmly into their mouths.

If you want to know how I truly feel, I don't think that day will ever come. Hackers will always, overall, be smarter than Apple and MS, they'll always be smarter than the guys at the security vendors. Until we start getting into the realm of quantum computing, we're going to be playing cat and mouse. And quantum computing, once mainstream, will surely present it's own issues.

I don't see your point. I'm saying that making it work with 32bit 8 shouldn't be impossible or super difficult.

Not even talking about 64bit systems.

Yes, I was just responding to someone's comment about 32bit systems in Windows 8.

I certainly hope so as well.

I'm not talking about 32 bit systems, nor is the thread. We obviously know 32 bit is fine. My original concern was about 64 bit, and my point is that 64 bit systems are being sold to consumers more than 32 bit ones are. That's the case with Win 7, and, as I stated, due to the marketing, it isn't likely to change with Win 8 either.

I assumed this was talking about 32bit Windows 8 possibly causing problems for DW.

That's all I was responding to.

Whether people need 64-bit is irrelevant. I've been trying to find what percent of users have 64-bit computers, and found this:

    http://www.systemdetails.com/operating_system.php

It may only be 30%, but that's about 1 in 3 computers that could be using DefenseWall. 66% of Win 7 users have 64-bit, so considering more will be moving to 7 and 8 from XP, the number of 64-bit users will greatly increase.

Also, it's funny if you look, whenever XP goes up/down, Windows 7 goes down/up.

I emailed the developer several months to ask about a x64 version and the reply was rather rude so I would agree with you on this.

Soon, I hope. I would love to be able to use DefenseWall as my only security app.

It's certainly coming, although I'd not say quickly. It must have been 7 or 8 years ago that I bought my first 64bit capable hardware and yet even now 64bit OSes are still in the minority.

Guys, two things (when Ilya thinks this should not be revealed, mods must remove this post)

    First
Good news is that Ilya actually is developing a new security tool for a niche market which will provide a solid foundation of his business for the coming years. So it is not a matter of skill or effort, just choosing the best priorities (64 bits to be replaced by 128 soon, kernel to be changed again)

    Second
Ilya will go for 128 bit in stead of 64 (when it is backward compatible he will strike two flies in one stroke). He is dedicated to DefenseWall and the brand value of this product is to substantial to drop it.

Win8 will be out in a year :D

    Uhhh, lol, what?

128bit? I wouldn't count on it. And the same issues that face 64bit will face 128bit, patchguard.
