Very true and its the features of Avast that makes it the most full fledged free offer out there, no other AV comes close.

I on the average get two updates, sometimes more with the free version.

the context is quite different, the 60 updates have a noticeably smaller amount of signature than each of the avast updates obviously. its not like Norton adds 60x the amount of signatures and such as avast does a day.

In critical scenarios Avast has done push updates as well, even for their free versions.

The streaming micro-updates is one of the features planned for v5.1, by the way.

But only for the paid versions of avast, as the cost of this feature (on the backend) is very high - I mean in terms of bandwidth usage, connections (i.e. number of updating servers) etc.

    Thanks
    Vlk

Any news concerning web-shield? Avast! 5 cuts 50% off from my VDSL2 connection. :ouch:

How does saying you don't have a problem help him?? You might not have it but lots of users do have issues with webshield slowing there connection down. I witnessed it on a test computer I installed it in with fresh install of Windows XP. Also plenty of people complaining about it on avast forums as well.

I just said I don't have the problem. I didn't say it would help him.

I have deployed Avast in quite a few PCs out here and none are having any speed issues with the net, some are still on slower kbps broadbad so any impact would be sorely noticed by the users.

If you like your present AV that has a 99.9% detection rate, why would you switch?

Because there is no AV with a realistic 99.9% detection rate :D

Well, i never thought Avast was good until version 5.

In terms of protection Avast was never bad, but it was other area that let it down such as UI, resources usage.

Version not only make Avast's protection even better, Its UI looks modern and most importantly it is extremely light weight.

So to simply answer your question, it was version 5 that makes Avast good, and VERY GOOD.

Other than the Gui in 4.8, that looked like a '90's kenwood CD deck, it had mostly the same components and detection wasn't that bad. 97-98% in AV comp....If I remember correctly.

I see that we get the hype for 2010. :D

Even Avast 4.8 was more complete than the other free antiviruses. Avast 5 is an excellent AV as it was Avast 4.8 but not brought anything particularly new that has not seen in other av's.

    1. It was only beta
    2. Even if it was final version, it still would be a very good detection rate. Symantec and Kaspersky detected 99% of the samples, Avira 97% and Avast and MSE 96%. Very good result, considering that Symantec, Kaspersky and Avira were Internet Suites and Avast was only the antivirus.
