It might not be the ultimate cure, I think it is a big improvement, though.

Looks good, imho, if the biggest weaknesses are the endpoint devices.

Support for Blackberry and others to end soon:
    https://blog.whatsapp.com/10000617/WhatsApp-support-for-mobile-devices

"...by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on the following mobile platforms:
    - BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10
    - Nokia S40
    - Nokia Symbian S60
    - Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
    - Windows Phone 7.1"

Whats being missed in many articles is the fact that by default, it won't warn when your contacts Identity Key changes, you have to turn it on yourself.

The app is designed for the masses, most of whom couldn't care at all about the addition of encryption. Annoying them with popups when people change their phone would not be a good path.

People who care about such things are free to turn it on, hence, it is of no interest to article authors.

Hey, India joins the list of WhatsApp adversaries. I'm not very surprised, really :(

Why would WhatsApp make this move? I feel like their reputation just took a hit with many. I see what is in it for Google along with their other "big brother" related stuff.

Who cares? You shouldn't be enabling cloud backups of your messages if you care about privacy. You should probably also have a very limited log length.
