To me, the best download site is one that I can trust and where I can download programs that are checked for viruses, trojans, spyware etc. rather than collection alone. So far, my favorite is www.nonags.com They also carry a good assortment of programs there and are free :D Click on their "Software List" button (left panel) for their directory of software.

Another good one is www.Softpedia.com where some programs there are certified as clean, (no viruses or spyware).

For PC utilities: Mark's www.sysinternals.com (free), www.techsupportalert.com, and www.karenware.com (free)

Other popular sites, but I wouldn't feel as safe downloading from:
    www.download.com
    www.tucows.com
    www.majorgeeks.com

    Hope this helps,
    Jeff

For me, the first choice is always the site of the company who has made the software. Directly download from the author's site, there would be less chance that the software is modified from the original. If that's not available, I choose www.majorgeeks.com. Then, I will consider Download.com.

Softpedia had a page where it looked like a 'popup' to another user "hadi" on it. After some postings it was deemed to be an embedded ad which my Firewall had blocked, but 'hadi' had an alert from NOD when he tried to 'close' what he thought was a popup.

So I suggest others read THIS THREAD re Softpedia and make up your own mind. ;)

Anyone using 'Siteadvisor' extension in Firefox will see a RED alert on softpedia's sites also in addition to the experiences above.

here are some very good freeware sites which aren't so well known, or at least aren't mentioned as much as snapfiles (which i use alot for XP) i shouldn't really be giving away my secrets so easily :D

    http://shellcity.net/
    http://www.harrythecat.com/bookmark/
    http://www.sover.net/~wysiwygx/index.html
    http://bink.nu/Downloads.bink
this next one you have to change the date numbers in the url to get to the next page.
    http://www.freeware-guide.com/month/10-05.html
    so the next one is...
    http://www.freeware-guide.com/month/09-05.html
    http://www.klitetools.com/
    http://freshmeat.net/
    http://www.freedecentdownloads.com/
    http://www.aumha.org/freeware/morefree.htm

here are some freeware game sites
    http://www.gamehippo.com/
    http://www.acid-play.com/
    http://www.caiman.us/
    http://www.bruneras.com/
i've only played this game below from the site above and it's was OK, the pictures are from the game.
    http://www.bruneras.com/yavin_en.htm

so Siteadvisor is a firefox extension? does it need other software for it to work?

I use Snapfiles now. I used to use Klitetools for everything because their testing for malware etc was (reputedly) very rigorous, but something has happened to that site and almost no new free softs get posted. I'm really curious though, does anyone use http://dirfile.com/ ? There are dozens of cool looking softs there that I've not seen anywhere else (especially free folder lock progs) but does anyone know if its okay?

i've used dirfile afew times, but i'm never too sure to, although everything i've installed from there has been clean - maybe 3/4 things. normally when i see something from a site which i don't really trust i try to find the download on a site i do trust and get it from there instead.

Excuse me, how does exactly Softpedia "rock"? Razespyware is a rogue application by none other then the makers of Spysheriff, it's been seen executing stealth installs through exploits, installing fake threats, and being linked to none other than Coolwebsearch. That this software has been on Softpedia for months is pathetic. Softpedia shows ads fom Errorsafe, by the makers of our favorite scam Winfixer (in fact, probably just the same applications with a different name), one of the most vile and disgusting pieces of scam software ever created. And you say this software repository rocks? No, it doesn't. You can NOT trust stuff on Softpedia to be safe.

Thanks Ice, I was hoping you'd tried it. Well, my gut feeling is that Dirfile don't add anything, now I've just got to hope the author isn't a rascal! Oh can my nerves stand it...

download.com is exactly like softpedia.com as of scamware thats available from their is very high. just a few months ago they delisted apps that were playged with crap, but they still list some because the downloads were so high, "kazaa"... :(

ErikAlbert removes also download.com from the list of best download websites.
The best download websites need to be CLEAN. No gray, only white.
My list is becoming smaller people in stead of bigger. :D

LOLLL WOW! You are speaking like Louis XIV, king of France.:D I have not written "like Louis XVI" cause i do not wish your head to be chopped off if by chance you visit France and meet "sans culottes" on your way through the country LOLL!
So.... Heco, king of Provence, agrees with ErikAlbert!:D
