The Cisco 678 Router/modem is all in one. You connect your RJ11 phone line to the router and another to your network card.
Qwest uses this external router now because they use DTM. At least here they do but as I mentioned before , Qwest will be selling the new Actiontec Modem/Router in the near future.
This is something you use mainly on a high speed connection Blaze.

    Hi there Blaze,

Yes, a hardware firewall is a gateway between your PC and the internet.
It's indeed lots more secure to have such one.

Yes, it needs to have some kind of software on it, but it is far and far more difficult to crack or hack or whatever you want to call it.

Why does it need to have "software" on it?
One of the things it does, is this:
It is able to deny all inbound traffic that your PC didn't ask for. But how does that hardware firewall know that your PC didn't ask for it? It has to keep some kind of a table on it in which it remembers the request from your PC for some info from the internet.

    An example:
In Internet Explorer you type in the address field the name of this Wilders-forum (or, that's the same, you clicked in IE in your Favourites on Wilders-forum).
That means that you're asking the internet to give you this page.
So first: outbound traffic with your request (please give me the Wilders-forum).
Then: inbound traffic: internet gives you the Wilders-forum. :D
But, hey, that's inbound traffic.... How does your hardware firewall know that you asked for that inbound traffic? It could also have been a scan from a script kiddie...
So your hardware firewall needs a table in which it remembers for some time (some seconds or maybe minutes) that you yourself asked for this inbound traffic.
